Nyssa—It’s been a long season for the Lady Bulldog softball team, finished with an 11-11 overall record and 4-8 in the Eastern Oregon League.
Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs ended on a high note with a sweep over Umatilla, winning Game 1, 11-1, and Game 2, 8-3.
Nyssa fielded a team this season that was primarily underclassmen, with only two seniors — Belinda Escobedo and Alisha Hittle — and one junior, Tiffany Wentz.
Escobedo played first base for the Lady Bulldogs, and Hittle fielded shortstop.
“It was a good night for those two seniors,” Nyssa head coach Tracy Cleaver said. “I was nice to send them off with a pair of wins. They are going to be missed, and we have two big holes to fill for next year.”
Cleaver said this season was a disappointment for her because she thought she had the talent on the field to compete in the EOL.
“We made some mistakes, and things did not go our way this year,” Cleaver said. “Our younger players did, however, get a lot of playing time.”
Next season the Lady Bulldogs will field only one senior, Wentz, barring any transfers or newcomers to the team, but the coach is excited about the future.
In the seniors’ final two games, Hittle ended her high school career going 6-for-6 with 3 runs scored and two RBIs, while Escobedo went 2-for-4 with a couple of walks and three RBIs.
