Prisoner commits suicide at Snake River Correctional Institution
ONTARIO (AP) — An inmate at the Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario is dead as a result of apparent suicide.
Police are investigating the death of inmate Dannie Ray Peck, who was found dead in his cell Friday.
42-year old Peck was admitted to prison in 2006 for a life sentence for aggravated murder.
Nyssa community Rachel’s Challenge

A Rachel’s Challenge community assembly will be presented to the general public at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Nyssa High School auditorium. The assembly has free admission. Rachel’s Challenge, which originated from the personal beliefs of the first victim of the Columbine High School massacre, stresses the importance of treating others with compassion and kindness.
Macular degeneration seminar planned
The Oregon Commission for the Blind will be hosting a free seminar entitled, “Living With Macular Degeneration” from 10 a.m. to noon May 20 in the Snake River Conference Room at Holy Rosary Medical Center, 351 S.W. Ninth St., Ontario. A variety of topics will be covered, but this will not be a medical discussion. Anyone interested is invited to attend. Heart ‘n Home volunteers to receive awards

National Volunteer Week is April 27 through May 3 and Heart ‘n Home Hospice & Palliative Care has announced that 13 of its volunteers will be receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national honor offered in recognition of volunteer service. Established in 2003, the award is available on an annual basis to individuals, groups and families who have met or exceeded requirements for volunteer service and have demonstrated exemplary citizenship through volunteering.
