Melvin (Mel) Eugene Pulliam, 84, died peacefully on Sunday, April 13, 2008, at Presbyterian Care Center in Ontario, Ore.
Mel was born July 26, 1923, to Elzie J. (Jack) and Dorris Pulliam in Star, Idaho. A decorated veteran of World War II, Mel fought for his country as a paratrooper in the European Theatre and was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war, Mel worked in the Tri-cities area of Washington for many years, until moving to the Boise area, originally working in construction and eventually beginning a career in auto sales.
During his career, Mel worked for a number of dealerships in Idaho, until provided the opportunity in 1972 to establish Pulliam Motors, in Burns, Ore. After retiring, Mel and his wife, Bethene, moved to Ontario, Ore., and enjoyed traveling and playing golf with friends. A fighter, Mel endured many struggles, including the battle he waged against the debilitating disease of Alzheimer’s, which ultimately brought about his death. Mel experienced all that life could offer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his oldest brother, Ronald; and his sister, Gloria. Mel is survived by his loving wife, Bethene; his daughter, Terry Houston, and her husband, Ken; his two sons, Bill Nichols and his wife, Pam, and J. Pulliam and his wife, Marjorie; his brother, David; and his loving grandchildren, Travis, Raelynn, Kelsey, Natasha and Cami.
A memorial service and celebration of Mel’s life will be held in Mel’s honor at 1 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2008, at Lienkaemper Funeral Chapel in Ontario. A private inurnment ceremony will be held later that day at the cemetery in Emmett, Idaho.
