ONTARIO - A familiar face will be at the helm of Treasure Valley Community College athletics after college officials announced last week that Ed Aronson, who had been both an athlete and a coach at the institution, will become director of athletics beginning July 1.
Aronson will take over for Rick Baumann, who has held the position on an interim basis since September. Baumann, who is the head baseball coach, will resume his coaching and fundraising duties full time.
Aronson played baseball at TVCC from 1975 to 1977, and then went on to play ball at Linfield College, and later earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Boise State University.
He was TVCC’s assistant softball coach from 2000 to 2002 and also has more than 20 years experience as a collegiate basketball official, and during 10 of those years he could be seen officiating games at TVCC, he said. Aronson is now employed by the City of Ontario as its human resources director, but he has also worked as a planning technician for the city, and for most of his career he was general manager of Cable One and Chambers Cable, where he held a number of leadership positions.
“I am extremely ecstatic to get back into athletics and especially here at Treasure Valley.” Aronson said. “I’ve been in Ontario for the past 36 years. I couldn’t be happier about this opportunity. This is where I want to finish my career. I have a 10- to 12-year plan.”
Aronson said becoming the TVCC athletic director filled a desire to get back into athletics.
“I missed being involved,” he said. “I was interested three years ago (when the position came open). I’ve been interested ever since.”
The position, he said, also gives him an opportunity to get involved in the community.
Besides the competition, Aronson said he was attracted by the quality of the athletes and the character of the coaches — “the whole scene.”
As a player, Aronson competed in the Scenic West Conference — “I liked that level of competition” — but said the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges is a good fit for TVCC.
“I think it is a good conference,” he said.
One of the benefits is the amount of scholarship money for athletes is the same for member colleges, he said.
“It puts us on a more level playing field,” he said.
It is harder to recruit to a rural area, versus a metro college, he said.
“It is a tougher draw to Ontario over larger cities. It can be done.” he said. “I hope to be able to help coaches get that done. We have a good staff right now.”
TVCC President Jim Sorensen said the college was pleased to welcome Aronson to the college.
“We are excited to welcome Ed Aronson back to TVCC in this new position and look forward to his insight and leadership,” Sorensen said in a statement.
Aronson’s management experience, coupled with his athletics knowledge, made him the top candidate for the job, Sorensen said.
Four people were interviewed for the position.
