Mayor says Ontario faces ‘pressing’ issues
Joe Dominick believes growth will be the key element to the city’s future

Ontario — Ontario Mayor Joe Dominick said he has changed his mind regarding the best way to define Ontario since his last state of the city address.

“When I gave my address last time, I said ‘the state of the city is strong,’” Dominick said. “If I were to rewrite it, I think I’d say ‘The state of the city is exciting.’”

Dominick conceded in an interview Tuesday Ontario is facing a number of pressing issues right now.

“There is about three,” he said. “And they’re all pretty equally important. The most prominent issue is the future of Ontario — getting quality growth for everyone.”

Dominick said quality growth, in the form of new businesses, industry and encouraging people to build homes in Ontario is important because it can boost the city’s tax base.

“It will increase the tax base, which will increase the revenue to provide city services,” he said.

Another issue important to Dominick is the system development charges process.

“The public works committee is doing a good job at getting that done correctly, legally and getting something that we all can live with,” Dominick said.

Dominick also said the downtown revitalization plan should remain on track.

“I think it’s an 18-month process,” he said. “If we can get that done, implemented and complete we’ll be able to draw from the marketplace down to downtown.”

Dominick also talked about what he has learned while in office.

“I learned simple and silly things like what happens when you flush,” he said. “But I also learned a lot about council procedures.”

He mentioned the roll call vote used to end a meeting.

“In one of the meetings I want to have everyone signal the end of the meeting by roaring, like the Lion’s Club. I’ve never done that yet,” he said.

" Ever notice how anxious people are to pile on when an elected office holder doesn't address their own pet concern? Based upon all the feedback you've enjoyed on an informative article about our Mayor and the City of Ontario, I'd say that there should be not less than 12 people standing in line to fire for his job next round! As usual, no good deed goes unpunished! "

" Other than roaring like a lion, this could of been an article by Mayor Cammack, a year and a half ago. Seems the only change was some names, and don't think it was positive change at that. "

" Give the mayor a break he just mis-spoke. He only does it once every 12 years or so. Raise funds with cross walk stings. How about a penny a bag Wal-Mart tax? I feel encouraged to build a home alright just not in Ontario. However, I might pull another trailer home into Ontario and sandwich it with my fine Champion showcase model, open the parallel windows and call 'em doors. Viva la Rasta man. Then we can all go to the Westgate shopping mall and go window shopping.
Ontario is broken. "

" I stopped posting comments making fun of Joe. I don't have to, he does such a good job of doing that to himself.
Just think about circular torpedoes. Fire one! Fire two!
Oh-oh, Captain, we have incoming!
Boom!...Boom!
Joe, you are the beer wench of the month! Go grab a cold one for all of us! "

" It is time to recall the Mayor. He needs to get out fast. Our city is sinking fast. I am concerned for my job. I am worried. I can not start the recall. I work for the city. I am looking for work elsewere. "

" It is obvious to me what Ontario’s problem is> There are more stupid people than smart people and they have elected the most stupid as Mayor. "

" Three issues that is probably all he can handle at one time. The City has many issues and one of the most important to the existing employees is the low moral at City Hall. If you ignore it long enough it might go away, the only thing that is going to go away are all of the good employees. We have recently lost another 2 in the last month. I know of at least 4 others who are actively searching for work elsewhere. Is this really the type of City the citizens want? "

" Great story! Maybe after you get everyone to roar like lions, the Lions Club can help you repair the roads that have been torn up lately, or maybe get a better grasp on what new fast food restruant is going to help get more revenue in the city. Because, "I want to encourage more people to build in Ontario," isn't going to save us. What benefit would someone get to build a new home here. "

18 months wrote on Mar 26, 2008 8:27 PM:

" In 10 months the City will start on the upcoming budget. In a recent article in the Argus, it addressed the financial problem between $800,000 & $2.5 million. The revitalization plan will take 18 months. In order to create the revenue to cover the short fall of $800,000, you would need 20 stores about the size of Wal Mart paying property taxes. Do you see that much growth after the 18 months? If the pool is closed it would save about $100,000, leaving $700,000. That would mean 17 ½ stores. If you layoff two police officers and close the pool, you would only need about 14 stores. Do you see more than two stores of this sizes opening in Ontario within the next three years? Where’s the needed revenue?

" To the Argus you would do our community a great service if you would not print our Mayors juvenile comments. His statements are an embarrassment to the entire community. "

" Great article, our Mayor now knows what happens when he flushes his toilet. The City continoues to work on the same thing they have been for the last 3 years before everyone left. Ontario is now the laughing stock of the valley. "
