New Plymouth rolls Payette

Payette — The New Plymouth softball team used a big  seven-run sixth inning to lock up a 8-1 win over the Lady Pirates in Payette Thursday in non-league action.

The Lady Pilgrims were led defensively by pitcher Whitney Hodges who went the entire game giving up one run with eight strike outs and a walk.

Collecting RBIs for New Plymouth were Alisha Shipman, Shianne Edmunson, Anna Pittman, Hodges, Lauren Arnzen and Kelsie Cleverly. In a losing effort, Payette pitcher Mary Hershey went six innings with one punchout and a base on balls.

Payette scored it’s lone run in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1.

Fruitland      12

Homedale      3

HOMEDALE

The Fruitland softball team beat Homedale 12-3 Thursday in a Snake River Valley Conference showdown in Homedale for its third straight win, improving its record to 4-2.

Fruitland got on the board with a run in the first inning. Then it added two in the third, three in the fourth, five in the fifth and one more in the seventh inning, while giving up three runs in the third.

Grizzly Shelby Zamora went 3-for-4 and banged a home run.

Fruitland also had doubles from Bailey Olson and Tara Hutchinson.

“The girls have spent a lot of time practicing hitting,” Fruitland softball coach Hank Nawahine said. “We have had several of the girls’ dads spending time with them hitting, and it has paid off.”

The Lady Griz had a season-high 18 hits for the game.

“Hopefully it will continue to pay off,” Nawahine said.

Five Grizzly players had a multiple hit game.

“As a coach, I’m getting a lot of help, and I just can’t get over the people in the community that have done so much to lend a hand,” Nawahine said. “We are starting to see results. You can’t win if you can’t hit.”

The Lady Gizzlies will play again April 1, hosting Weiser.
