Last modified: Thursday, March 13, 2008 1:43 PM PDT Lady Wolverines look to improve on last year’s 5-19 record By Matthew Neal Argus Observer Weiser — The Lady Wolverines look to improve upon last year’s season with a solid core of returning players and a few new faces. Tiffany Nelson third base, Cassidy Pratt, short stop, Nicole Edwards, pitcher, Angie Edwards, outfield/infield, Ashley Johnson, pitcher, and Sam Larsen, second base, all return from last year’s squad.   New additions to the roster include Annaka Hatley, Paige Jensen, Serina Duran, Brit Phillips and Kenzie Eisenbarth.   Last year the Weiser hurlers went 5-19.   This year, Weiser is off to a strong start with a pair of wins against Nampa Christian and a loss to Vale.   “Honestly, I think we’re going to be pretty good this year. As soon as we get a few things ironed out we’re going to be a force,” Weiser softball coach Dale Emery said.   Emery believes a key strength of the squad is its pitching.   “Our pitching has been real good so far. We gave up three hits against Vale, and Nicole gave up two against Nampa Christian, and Angie gave up one against Nampa Christian.”     Emery still thinks they need to work on their defense. “Up until the game against Vale, it has been pretty good. Our offense, as far as hitting the ball, we’re not really ripping the cover off the ball as of right now so those are some things we will be improving on.”    Over the course of the next few weeks, Emery says the squad will focus on infielding and outfielding and hitting in practice.   “We didn’t have a good year last year, and we will be looking to definitely do better this season.”   Weiser hosts Ontario today at 5 p.m.   “They are a little bigger school, but that’s OK because we need to play bigger teams. It will be tough.   Ultimately, Emery wants a shot at state and believes his team can make a good run against other Snake River Valley Conference teams this year.   “We hope to make it to the state tournament,” he said.
