City manager search moving ahead
First round of interviews set for March 21

Ontario — Ontario should have a new city manager by summer.

The first round of interviews is planned for March 21, with three applications submitted so far, according to Prothman Associates, the firm in charge of the search.

“It’s not a lot,” Ontario Mayor Joe Dominick said. “But at least we have three in.”

While Prothman is in charge of the candidates search, owner Greg Prothman said he attempts to involve council members throughout the process.

“We read all the resumes then join the council and go through them,” he said. “We then get down to the top 10, 11 or 12 and do semi-final interviews.”

He said he expects 30 to 40 applicants for the Ontario top slot by the time the quest concludes, based on other similar-sized city searches.  Dominick said he was originally concerned about the amount of communication between Prothman and the council. However, the communication breakdown was because of an e-mail malfunction, Dominick said. After continued attempts to get in touch through e-mail, Dominick decided it would be a better idea to go more low-tech.

“I didn’t know that the e-mail wasn’t working,” Dominick said. “I had a good conversation with them and things are on track. We’re going to be doing weekly phone updates now so I can keep updating the council.”  Ontario City Councilman John Gaskill adopted a wait-and-see attitude towards the search.

“They presented a timeline about how long it would take,” he said. “If we’re interested in knowing something, they would tell us. They gave us a timeline, so we’ll see how that works.”

The search timeline is slated to take four months from when Prothman first received its information regarding the town. However, the company’s Web site states the search will continue until the position is filled. The City Council contacted the consulting firm three weeks ago, with advertising for the position beginning two and a half weeks ago.

The Bellevue, Wash.,-based firm posted information about the position on its Web site and mailed letters alerting other city managers, administrators, professional journals, and Web sites about the opening.  Dominick said that the company would continue to mail more letters alerting people to the position.

“They told me 800 letters will go out,” he said. “They wanted to make sure they got the direct mail pieces out by the weekend.”

Prothman said that his company talked with council members and residents to get a better idea of what the city was looking for in a city manager.

“We talked to pretty much anyone we could get our hands on,” he said.

Dominick said he has an idea of the qualities he would like to see in a city manager.

“I want a strong leader,” he said. “Someone who is willing to say ‘no’ at any time. Someone who can make their own decisions and decisions for the rest of the community. Not someone who has to be everybody’s buddy.”

" 3 Applications for a $100,000 job, What is wrong with Ontario? they should of recieved at least 30 applications, Maybe they have heard about our infamous Mayor Pinochio Joe. "

" The Dynamic Duo strike again, this isn’t the first time our Mayor, Norm and Dan have teamed up to cause ill will and discontent. Remember the petition they started to remove the Human Resource Director, they were able to talk 3 employees into signing. Now that is true leadership, we are hosed. "

" To Ontario Res. you can thank our Mayor for that it was not that way before he started his cheap shot tactics. Go back and look at some of the idioatic things he has said and done. "

" I live in Payette and work in Ontario. I was seriously considering moving to Ontario. After watching the circus at City Hall this year, no thanks I will stay in Payette. "

" When I chose to build in Ontario, it was for convenience to shopping and medical care. It's worked out pretty well, too. Nice neighbors.
A couple of civic organizations to which I can contribute my time. But I sure wish I had never read these blogs. It appears that Ontario folks take a unique approach to problem-solving. How successful have you all been with this ruder-than-pigs behavior when addressing one another? I suspect that our city manager left because he couldn't take the heat and wanted to get out of the kitchen. Period. This happens all the time. Everywhere. City managers come and they go, but the town remains intact. However, if I was applying for the position of City Manager in Ontario, I would take one look at these blogs and say, "No thanks. The mood in that town is not good. Who needs it." "

" It is very sad to watch the recent changes in Ontario. They had a really good management team in place and things were moving forward very nicely. They have recently lost some really good people and they seem to be having a difficult time attracting qualified replacements. It is too bad that personal feelings and politics get in the way of running an organization like a City. I am glad I moved to Fruitland years ago, people in Ontario pull your heads out of the sand before it is to late. "

" Why is Ontario having such a hard time attracting applicants for City Manager and Public Works Director? Are these salaries competitive in the market place? According to our Mayor Joe Duminick, the salary is above the Malheur County average. Our Mayor and his appointee to the Compensation Committee Norm Croom both seem to think this would be more than sufficient to attract good candidates. Could it be no one wants to work for a City that has a mental midget for a Mayor? "

" What the Mayor really wants is someone less intelligent than him so he can lead them around by the nose. Our last City Manager was not going to play that role so he left. Good luck finding someone more ignorant than our Mayor Joe Duminick, I don’t believe that person exists. "

" Ontario’s reputation precedes it as a City led by an egomaniac for a Mayor and an impotent Council. If they receive 10 qualified applications they will be lucky "

" Our Mayor, who happens to be the village idiot speaks his mind and removes all doubt that he is indeed a mindless buffoon. E- Mail problem my backside, he has more excuses than Bill Clinton when he pointed his finger at us and said he did not have sex with that women.

" So Joe, How much did you save the city by running off Scott Trainor? Now we have to pay the next guy about 15k more and we have to pay the research firm to find them...How much are we paying them? We have saved so much money Joe, I'm So happy you are my Mayor, you've done so many positive things for the city, and most importantly, you've found so many new forms of revenue for the city, while making sure we don't have that gosh darned sales tax by golly. JOE YOU ARE A JOKE, AND AN EMBARRASSMENT TO OUR CITY!!! "

Wow Joe. We had a strong leader. You ran him off! "
