ONTARIO — The Payette boys basketball team was one point better than Homedale, beating them 56-55 during game one of the District III 3A basketball tournament Tuesday evening at Treasure Valley Community College.
Collin Hershey was like a wildfire on the court scoring 29 points to help the Pirates advance to game four, where they will face the Fruitland Grizzlies Thursday.
“We have played these guys twice and we have been competitive and it is hard to beat a good team three times and we were lucky to do that,” Pirate basketball coach Shawn Scow said. “Hershey hit a big shot towards the end. We always talk about keeping our composure if we get up or down and I think they are starting to key into that and they are playing better because of that. We didn’t rebound very well at all, it was probably one of our worst rebounding games of the year and it nearly cost us but we got a some critical rebounds in the end when it counted.”
Homedale’s Tyler Gibson lead the Trojans with 14 points.
“Homedale can get after you and make you do things you don’t want to do on offense,” Scow said.
Payette (11-10 overall) plays Fruitland Thursday at 8:00 p.m.
