Payette boys get revenge on Melba



Prep basketball action was hot Saturday night with more than a dozen games being played across the valley.

With the non-league schedules wrapping up, local teams put forth their best effort as they get geared up of league play.

Payette

There is nothing quite like getting even, and on Saturday night, the Payette Pirate boys basketball team got there’s as they defeated Melba 44-42.

Earlier in the season, Melba put it to Payette with a 20 point win. Payette head coach Shawn Scow said he was proud of the way his team played.

“They played as a team for four quarters,” Scow said. “They did an outstanding job.”

Payette and Melba ended the first eight minutes of play tied at 11, and in the second quarter the Pirates were one point better than Melba and took the  24-23 lead into the locker room.

Both teams added eight points in the third quarter and in the final frame, it was Payette outscoring Melba 12-11 for the two point win.

Payette was led by Collin Hershey as he tallied 13 points.  Jordan Schultz pitched in with 12 points in the win.

With the win Payette improved to 6-5 on the season and will open Snake River Valley Conference play Thursday against McCall.

Fruitland      44

Fruitland

The Grizzlies boys basketball team got tested in front of the their hometown fans as the Baker Bulldogs gave them all they wanted in a thrilling double overtime game in which Fruitland came out on top 60-50.

Head coach Mike Fitch said his team had chances at the end of regulation and at the end of the first overtime to win the game, but could not get the ball to fall.

Fruitland’s Jordan Felgenhauer  and Ty Pena led the Griz with 15 points each and Matt Stanger added 14.

In the final overtime period Fruitland outscored Baker 11-2 for the 10 point win.

“I am proud of the boys and they battled the whole game,” Fitch said.

Fruitland will open SRV play Thursday when Weiser comes to town.

Prep girls action

The Adrian Lady Antelopes were 25 points better than Spray as they defeated them 67-42 Saturday in High Desert league play.

Adrian jumped out to an early 28-11 lead and never looked back as they cruised to victory.

Adrian was led by Terra Rust who scored 15 points.

The Lady Antelopes outrebounded Spray 34-16 and forced 28 Spray turnovers in the win.

Jordan Valley     74

Mitchell     32

Jordan Valley

  It was a one-two punch series of weekend games for Jordan Valley.

The boys’ basketball team throttled Mitchell on Saturday 74-32.

  Mustangs Alek Quintero, Zac Fillmore, and Brandon Mackenzie each scored 14 points on the night.

  The Mustangs 42 rebounds during the game put the brakes on Mitchell’s scoring. The Mustangs also had 20 steals compared to Mitchell’s three.

  On Friday night Jordan Valley was defeated by Spray 60-44. Spray shot 5-of-15 three-pointers and had 27 rebounds and eight steals to help defeat Jordan Valley.

  Zac Fillmore led his team in scoring during Friday’s game with 16 points followed by Koehl Trautman’s 12 points.
