Lady Bulldogs get past Melba



Friday night Treasure Valley was hopping with prep hoops as teams get back into action after the holiday break.

Area teams are finishing up their non-league portions of their schedules and for many league play will begin this coming week.

The Nyssa Lady Bulldogs didn’t need a ton of points to send the visiting Melba Lady Mustangs packing with a loss in Friday’s 32-27 win. In a game that was highlighted by low scoring, the Lady Bulldogs battled back in the final quarter to pull out the win.

Nyssa led by two points after the first quarter of play 9-7, but in the second stanza only scored three points and Melba took advantage of the Bulldog drought and piled up eight to their total to take the lead at the break, 17-12.

In the third frame, both teams added seven points to the score board and the final quarter began with Melba looking at stealing a road win leading 24-19.

But then the Bulldogs came off the porch and bit the Mustangs with 13 fourth quarter points for the come-from-behind  32-27 win.

With the win Nyssa improved to 6-4 on the season and will be looking for win No. 7 Tuesday when the La Grande Tigers come to town.

Nyssa had a balanced scoring attack with  Genniel Wagstaff leading the way with seven points and Saije Froerer, Katie Booth and Amanda Bittinger each logging six points.

Head coach Danny Pratt said they were able to get Melba to expand its zone which allowed them to get the ball inside to Froerer and Booth.

Annie Hafer scored 15 points and the Weiser girls basketball team broke open a slim 28-22 lead with a 16-10 fourth quarter run to defeat Vale 44-32 in non-league girls action Friday in Weiser.

The Wolverines jumped out to an early 13-10 lead after one quarter of play and went on a 12-6 second quarter run to take a 25-16 lead at the break.

“We started well,” Weiser head coach Tim Erhard said. “Hafer and Overgaard jump-started us a little bit. We were able to build the lead in the second quarter. We beat them up in the first and second quarter and did a great job defensively.”

In the third quarter, the Wolverines scored only three points, while the Vikings totaled six, but Weiser still held the six point lead.

The Weiser defense stepped up and forced Vale into 11-of-41 shooting from the field, 29 turnovers and also stole the ball 15 times.

Hafer was followed up by Tiffany Nelson, who scored seven points, dished out four assists and grabbed five steals.

Vale, which played without Mary Hicks, was led by Katy Lutjens and Brooke Hawkins, who scored seven points apiece. Lutjens also added seven boards and Sam Kamo chipped in two assists.

Weiser (7-6 overall, 1-2 league) hosted Ontario Saturday, while Vale (4-9 overall) next kicks off league play Friday with a road date against Grant Union.

Homedale outscored Payette in every quarter of play and got 18 points from Mandy Brasher to defeat the Lady Pirates 43-34 in Snake River Valley Conference girls basketball action Friday in Payette.

“Our defense let them do whatever they wanted,” Payette head coach John Kowatsch said. “Everything they hit was within 10-feet. I think they (Homedale) hit one outside shot in the game. We were not disciplined defensively and that was the game.”

The Trojans led 19-14 at the break and outscored Payette 13-10 in the third quarter to take a 32-24 lead into the final stanza.

In the fourth quarter, Payette crept to within a five point deficit with four minutes left in the contest, but could not get any closer.

Hailey Schmidt led the Pirates with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Amanda Jaeger chipped in six points. Cass Gross added three points and four assists and the Pirates also held the 32-28 rebounding edge. The Pirates, however committed 24 turnovers and could only make good on 6-of-14 from the free throw line.

Payette (5-10 overall, 1-3 league) next travels to McCall Friday.

  New Plymouth had the long range shots falling Friday against Vale, knocking down nine 3-point baskets on their way to a 61-34 win over Vale in non-league boys basketball action in New Plymouth.

Wes Hooten broke out with four 3-pointers on his way to a 17-point effort and both Jaime Garcia and Nolan Kerby nailed two long range shots each.

Vale actually enjoyed a 12-11 lead after one quarter of play, but then the Pilgrims got going with a 16-8 second quarter run to take a 27-20 halftime lead.

New Plymouth broke things open in the second half using a 16-10 third quarter run and an 18-4 fourth quarter run which iced the game.

Jaimie Brown enjoyed an all-around game with 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, while teammate Carson Knapp chipped in seven points.

“He was definitely a leader tonight,” New Plymouth head coach Tyler Gaston said. “He always kind of tries to get people involved early. He draws so much attention, so he was able to pass the ball around and they happen to hit their shots tonight.”

Vale was led by Tyler Huston and Russell Seals, who scored 12 points apiece and Matt Dentinger added six points.

New Plymouth (4-5 overall) faces Marsing Thursday, while Vale (2-8 overall) hosts Baker City Tuesday.

Parma

Things have been tough for the Parma Panthers in the early going of their basketball season. With a 1-7 record and coming off a 10 point 54-44 loss to Homedale Friday, Parma coach Nate Tessmer said his team is still playing hard.

Parma fell into a big hole in the first quarter as Homedale posted a 20 spot on them and led by 14 after the first eight minutes of play.

Then in the second quarter, Parma returned the 20 point scoring effort to Homedale, but the Trojans were still hot as they logged 14 more to its total and led at the half 34-26.

The third quarter was much like the first for Parma as they again gave Homedale a huge advantage.

Homedale scored 18 points in the third quarter to Parma’s eight and increased its lead to 52-36.

Parma ended the game with a 10 point fourth quarter, while Homedale added a two spot for the final score of 54-44.

Parma was led by Bryant Timmons with 15 points.

The Panthers will wrap up its non-league play Tuesday when Nyssa comes to town.

  The Nyssa boys’ basketball team was eight points better than Cole Valley Friday night as the Bulldogs posted a 58-50 win at Cole Valley.

  “We just wore them out in transition,” Nyssa coach Gabe Fuentes said. “But it was fun to watch two totally different teams. They were freer and looser and we got up on the transition.”

  Bulldog Eric Jensen had 18 points on the night followed by Seth Glenn’s 17. Both Jeremiah Leos and Jesse Martinez pitched in 10 points a piece.

“We found out what we do well. We run and run and run. Carter Spear did a good job of getting the ball in front court,” Fuentes said.

  Nyssa’s solid first half led them towards victory. “We flew to the ball all night and we put up a lot of shots,” he said.

Nyssa, now 4-7, travels to Parma on Tuesday.
