Haueter leads Ontario over Nyssa

Nyssa — Ontario lit up the Bulldog gym with the long ball as the Tigers nailed seven three-pointers on their way to a 63-45 win over Nyssa in nonleague boys basketball action Thursday.

Nyssa head coach Gabe Fuentes said the difference in the game was the turnovers his team committed in the second half.

The Bulldogs committed 14 in the second half, and during one stretch of the contest, Nyssa had six consecutive trips that resulted in a turnover, and Ontario made the Bulldogs pay.

The Tigers were led by Jacob Haueter with 17 points.

Haueter stroked three of Ontario’s seven three-pointers.

Two other Tigers logged double digit scoring, Josh Mejia and Luke Christiani each with 10 points.

Nyssa’s Seth Glenn scored 14 points and Jesse Martinez added 13.

The two teams battled to a three-point game in the opening half, with Ontario leading 28-25 at the break.

Then the Tigers broke the game open the second half for the win.

“The biggest thing was there were two teams out there, and one team was the aggressor,” Fuentes said. “We weren’t that team. We played tentative.”

With the win the Tigers improve to 3-7 on the season and will shoot for win No. 4 against Vale Saturday.

Nyssa will travel to Cole Valley tonight and try for win No. 4 as well.

Nampa Christian ...........49

Payette ........................43

The Payette boys basketball team squandered a double-digit first half lead and were outscored 32-16 in the second half in a 49-43 loss to Nampa Christian Thursday in non-league boys basketball action in Nampa.

The Pirates jumped out to a 9-6 first quarter lead and went on a 17-11 run in the second quarter to take a 26-17 lead into the locker room.

In the third quarter, the Trojans started hitting shots, while Payette went cold from the field and from the charity stripe.

For the game, Payette connected on 9-of-24 from the free throw line and had three players hit more than two field goals.

“Free throws are a funny thing. We work on them practice just like everybody else. They just didn’t go in for us,” Payette head coach Shawn Scow said. “We have to come out more mentally prepared in the second half. Twice this year we have had first half leads and lost the game. As a coach, I have to do a better job of getting the team prepared. We need to be in better shape. Looks like we’re tired in the second half and that’s my fault.”

Collin Hershey scored a team-high 18 points and Tyler Kuder added eight points for Payette.

Jake Novotny chipped in five points, Jordan Schultz scored four points and Drake Serrano added three points.

Payette (5-5 overall) next hosts Melba Saturday and kicks off league play Thursday with a home date against McCall-Donnelly.

Weiser ........................... 43

New Plymouth ................32

A solid team effort lifted the Weiser Wolverines over host New Plymouth Thursday in a 43-32 non-league win.

New Plymouth committed 20 turnovers and Weiser made six treys.

The Weiser defense appllied a consistent barrage of pressure on the New Plymouth ball handlers, and Pilgrim coach Tyler Gaston said it was that pressure that caused his team to play timidly in the game.

In the opening half of play, the two teams battle closely. At the end of the first quarter, Weiser led by a mere point, 9-8,  and by the break, Weiser increased its lead to two points, leading 16-14.

The game remained close through the third stanza with Weiser scoring 15 points and the Pilgrims logging 12.

It was in the final frame where Weiser pulled away for the 11 point win as the Wolverines added 12 more to their totals and held New Plymouth to six.

Willie Overgaard led Weiser with 10 points, and six other Wolverines logged points in the win as well.

The top scorer for New Plymouth was Jaimie Brown with 13.

New Plymouth (3-5 overall) hosts Vale at 7:30 p.m. tonight, while Weiser (8-0 overall) travels to Baker City tonight.
