Winnemucca - Tommy Martinez and Anthony Rangel notched five pins apiece as the Ontario wrestling team notched a seventh place finish at the Lowry wrestling tournament Saturday in Winnemucca, Nev.
The Tigers squared off against 31 other schools ranging from Nevada, Oregon and Idaho and put forth 139 points for their top-10 finish.
Nampa (238) walked away with first place honors, followed by Spring Creek (204) which wound up in second place overall.
Douglas (174), Burns (172), Fallon (170), Lowry (140) rounded the top six team places followed by Ontario.
Michael Gonzalez (135) and Andres Hernandez (145) chalked up fifth-place finishes, Juvenal Carrillo (112) earned sixth place honors, while Chase Fields (125), Frank Lopez (152) and Michelangelo Ortiz (HWT) all earned seventh-place finishes.
“This was a real tough tournament,” Ontario head coach Charlie Anthony said. “Most of these Nevada schools have 15 or more matches wrestling in the season. We wrestled well yesterday (Friday) and early this morning (Saturday) we did really well. But in the afternoon, our sharpness and conditioning caught up with us. Even with that, I was really proud how the boys did and we had some real good performances.”
Rangel, whose loss in the championship match moved his record to 9-1 on the season said he was nervous at first but settled down as the tournament went on.
“It went pretty well. It was nice to get second place,” Rangel said. “We did real well as a team. We weren’t as ready as we should have been but with another week of practice, we could have done a lot better. Seventh place at a tournament like this, shows how good we can be.”
