Marsing — The Nyssa girls’ basketball team beat Marsing 54-33 on Monday night in what Nyssa basketball coach Danny Pratt called the team’s best win yet for the season.
“Today was a good game,” he said. “We were looking for a breakout game and we got it. We had good performances and it was good to see all of our practice work come into action.”
Marsing ran into trouble early when it found itself down by five in the first quarter, but the death knell for them was when Nyssa forced two turnovers and went on a 30 second 8-0 run by hitting two from downtown and a layup.
“We got a few steals and and then we were up by twelve in the second half,” Pratt said. “They were missing a key player but they pressed the whole time.”
On Friday, the Nyssa boys had their own troubles in Marsing and the Nyssa girls wanted the win.
“The girls wanted to beat them for how they treated the boys on Friday and we didn’t want to lose to them,” Pratt said.
Nyssa’s Chase booth hit four from deep and two jumpers for nine points and Contreras hit three three-pointers for nine points. Amanada Bittenger scored five two-point shots for ten total.
Perhaps in what was her best game thus far in the season, Kimber Wagstaff tallied five two-pointers, one three and went 2-2 from the foul line for 15 points.
“Wagstaff played her best game of the year and was everywhere for us tonight. She showed her leadership tonight,” Pratt said.
Marsing’s Clausen posed a big threat to Nyssa by recording 15 points during the game. Nyssa did have some foul trouble and they paid for it with Marsing’s 14-18 from the foul line.
Nyssa improved to 4-1 with the win and will be in action again Thursday, when they travel to Melba for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
