Weiser — Weiser was 23 points better than the visiting Vale Vikings Thursday as the Wolverines improved to 2-0 on the year with a 60-37 win.
Weiser came out of the chute playing solid ball, putting up 12 points to Vale’s four in the first five minutes of play, and by the end of the first period, Vale found itself in a 14-point hole that they could never climb out of.
Weiser’s domination in the first carried over into the second quarter. Vale did, however, manage to gain some steam, scoring 11 points.
Weiser, with its strong defense, held Vale from scoring any more sinking 19 points of their own to take a 39- 17 halftime lead.
Vale had trouble finding its groove from the start, and committed too many turnovers while Weiser kept the play tight and kept pressing Vale throughout the match.
In the third quarter, the Wolverines added another 17 points to Vale’s 10 and put up a huge lead that Vale could never overcome.
In the final quarter of the game Vale’s intensity rivaled that of Weiser’s game-long performance and they put 10 points up to Weiser’s four.
In the end though, it was not enough and Weiser took the match 60-37.
“I was happy with the way our kids performed,” Weiser basketball coach Dave Shirts said. Brandon Richins lead the Wolverines in scoring with 11 points, making four two-pointers and going 3-4 from the foul line.
Trent Winegar and Grayson Duncan both had nine point games and Ian Muir contributed eight.
“They kept the intensity up the whole game but we did have some reaching fouls we should not have had.”
Vale’s season could be said to be only three practices and one game long, as some of its players are coming off the football field and are still adjusting and trying to tighten up.
“They’re just off from football but they will be a good team once they start rolling,” Shirts said. Vale’s Russ Seal lead in scoring with 3 from the field and went 6-7 from the foul line for 12 points and teammate Alex Miller had 10 points for the night.
“We missed a lot of shots early and turned the ball over too much,” Vale coach Tom Snook said. “But they played hard the whole way through and we will get better”
