Idaho fishing
Boise River: Steelhead have been stocked in the river and anglers have been finding them in all the usual spots. Further stockings are planned until about 1,000 steelhead have gone into the river. Brown trout are in the middle of spawning, and rainbow trout are starting to concentrate in deeper runs and pools. Look for riffles above deeper pools for fly and spin fishing, and bait anglers should try drift fishing in deeper holes.
South Fork Boise has dropped to winter flow levels and has been very good when the weather cooperates.
Lake Lowell: Bass must be thinking about taking on some groceries with the cool-down. This can lead to some of the year’s best bassing if anglers can reach them without a motor.
The lake is closed to fishing from motorized boats from September 30 to mid-April. Fishing from human-powered craft is allowed in restricted areas during the closure; see refuge website for details.
Brownlee Reservoir: Cooler water has pushed bass into deeper areas; fish 20-50 feet. Catfishing from shore using cut-bait should remain good through the month.
C.J. Strike Reservoir: Fishing is picking up for boat and bank anglers. Best bank action is near the dam, with trollers hitting the main reservoir near the dam and the narrows.
Trout fishing also is good below the dam in the river, with rainbows around 14 inches, several at 18 and a few pushing 20 inches.
Bass anglers are reporting fair to good fishing – when the wind isn't howling – but the fish are big. Anglers should focus on areas getting the most sun.
Yellow perch fishing is still good in about 15 to 20 feet of water with catches of 11- to 13-inch fish.
Snake River: The sturgeon fishing in the Snake River below the C.J. Strike dam has been hit and miss and fishing pressure has been light on most days. Anglers report up to 15 to 20 hook-ups per day.
Lucky Peak and Arrowrock: Water levels are low in Arrowrock and Lucky Peak but trout fishing from the bank can be the best way to go anyway.
Boise Area Ponds: With the cooler weather, trout stocking has resumed in the various park ponds in the Treasure Valley.
These are great for after school or work. See the Family Fishing Waters brochure (link below) to find the nearest pond.
