Chukars hit hardwood

TVCC’s Mychal Harris (right) goes up for an easy layup, while team mates look on, during the Chukars alumni game. Over the weekend, TVCC traveled to Coeur D’Alene to play Williston State College. TVCC won the game 68-65.
Couer d’Alene - It was a tale of two halves for the Treasure Valley Community College men’s basketball team.

The Chukars shot 22 percent and went 0-of-13 from the 3-point line and were looking up at a 13-point deficit and cut it to 31-25 at the half.

“We came out and we shot horrible,” TVCC head coach Drake Wallick said. “And 10 minutes in the game it was 12-6. After a timeout was called for media, I told them that we are in a great spot  to be down six after not having hit a shot. I still felt good, where we were at.”

TVCC then rebounded with a 16-of-35 shooting effort in the second-half, and walked away with a 68-65 win over Williston State College Friday in men’s college basketball action in Couer d’Alene.

The saving grace was the free throw shooting and rebounding for the Chukars, as they connected on 17-of-25, while Williston made good on 6-of-10.

Jason Mumm led the scoring for TVCC, going 8-of-15 from the field for a team-leading 17 points along with six boards.

Mumm was supported by Shane Miller, who scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds while Ryan Goodwin added 12 points.

Williston had chances down the stretch with possession of the ball with 17 seconds left in the contest. The Chukar defense stood tall and forced a wild 3-point shot at the buzzer to walk away with the road win.

“We defended them,” Wallick said. “When it came down to a last-second shot, they probably had someone they didn’t really want to shoot it.”

TVCC (1-0 overall) next hosts Western Wyoming at 8 p.m. Friday for their home opener.

Lady Chukars drop two in Twin Falls

Twin Falls

After hearing the news of Krista Kulm’s injuries, the Treasure Valley Community College women’s basketball team couldn’t find its stride losing a pair of games during the CSI Thanksgiving tournament in Twin Falls.

Kulm, a sophomore, suffered a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus in her left knee and is out for the season.

In the opener, TVCC fell behind 54-27 in the first half to CSI and fared a lot better in the second half, before losing 103-68.

Ashlie Macfarlane had a breakout game with 24 points, hitting on seven field goals and 9-of-13 from the charity stripe. Hope Williams added 13 points and Kylie Roberts chipped in seven points.

The Chukars connected on 20-51 shots and had a good night at the line, making good on 25-of-31 attempts.

In the nightcap, Williams had a team-high 17 points and Kelly Howard added 12 points, but it wasn’t enough as Salt Lake Community College defeated TVCC 75-56 in women’s college basketball action.

Salt Lake used its hot shooting and staked themselves to a 43-17 halftime cushion, before TVCC was able to cut the deficit.

The Chukars outscored Salt Lake 39-32 in the second half, but couldn’t get the lead under 10 points.

“Against Salt Lake we had a good first 10 minutes and entire second half,” TVCC head coach SuEllen Shurtliff said. “Other than that we played great. Against these ball clubs, you can’t have any letdowns. We look forward to playing Salt Lake in two weeks at our house.”

TVCC (0-3 overall) next weekend will split up the squads with one team heading to the Walla Walla tournament, to take on Kara Hiatt, Chelsey Ramos and the Mount Hood Saints.

The other team plays in the Post-Thanksgiving tournament in Twin Falls.
