ONTARIO — It is not Las Vegas, but the Treasure Valley Community College’s “The Sting” is the place to be for people who want to do a little “gambling” — with all kinds of opportunities to win something — and all for a good cause.
“The Sting” is sponsored every year by the TVCC Foundation. TVCC Foundation Executive Director Cathy Yasuda said the event last year raised $35,000 for scholarships that are awarded to TVCC students, easily making “The Sting” the foundation’s largest fundraiser.
“We have got all kinds of things going on,” Yasuda said of the event, which starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Four Rivers Cultural Center.
Tables will open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, which will be available at the door, cost $25 per person, and include chips, two beverage tickets, the food and entertainment.
“We have lots of tables,” Yasuda said, with blackjack the most popular game. There will also be craps and Texas holdem, and a roulette wheel. When not participating in the gambling scene, Yasuda said people can take part in the live auctions that will take place periodically throughout the night. Participants can bid on such things as a Predator 90, a four-wheeler, which Yasuda said will be the largest auction item of the evening.
“We have over 100 silent auction items,” she said.
There will be raffle tickets sold for some items, as well as free raffles people can participate in when they cash in their chips.
“We’re doing a card game,” Yasuda said. Participants will buy a $25 card, and when they turn it in they will get at least $25 or more in cash or coupons or merchandise back. One card-holder will receive a large cash prize, she said.
“There will be some surprises during the evening. It’s all supported by the local community,” Yasuda said. “We are grateful for the people who support the event. It’s a lot of fun.”
