Ontario - What do you get when your offense rushes for 398 yards and passes for another 82? And what happens when your defense gives up a stingy 199 yards? The answer, is a 70-7 blowout. That is what the Ontario Tigers did Friday night against the Madras White Buffalos in Ontario’s Homecoming game.
The Tiger defense took control early and never let up as they replayed the scene from Tombstone when Wyatt Earp was dropping buffalo left and right. The Madras White Buffalo were dropping all night as the Tigers displayed their most physical game of the season.
“We were very physical tonight and I am glad to see it,” Tigers head coach Randy Waite said.
The Tigers expected Madras to begin the game with an eight-man front on defense, and they did, but it wasn’t long before they were forced to drop out of that and cover the Tiger air attack. Now the running game was opened up and Ontario exploited it with 398 rushing yards on 39 carries, that’s right, 10.2 yards per carry. No wonder all the fans kept saying “Another Tiger first down,” every time the public address announcer prompted them. Ontario collected 22 first and tens on the night, while the White Buffalo struggled to get nine.
The win moved the Tigers to a 7-0 in non-league games, which was a goal for the team.
“It’s nice to accomplish one of our goals. We wanted to go undefeated in our pre-league games and we did,” Waite said. “Now we have a new goal and that is to make it to state by winning the league.”
The Tigers will begin league play Friday at 7 p.m., hosting Baker who is coming off a 26-10 loss to Payette. In fact, Baker has not won a game all year.
The Tigers did not waste any time scoring as they found paydirt on their first possession of the game.
The drive took three plays and covered 27 yards, which Loren Stewart capped off with a 6-yard run at the 9:17 mark of the first quarter.
Jacob Haueter added the point after for the early 7-0 lead. Stewart finished the night with 96 yards on nine carries and a pair of touchdowns - one rushing and one receiving.
Once the scoring train got going, Madras could do nothing to stop it. Late in the opening quarter, Jake Turner got a piece of the action on a 37 yard score.
Haueter’s kick was true, boosting the Tiger lead to 14-0.
The Tigers added four more touchdowns in the second quarter to go up 42-0 at recess.
Senior Tiger quarterback Bryson Sap threw for three scores, the first to Ryan Laubacker for 30 yards, then he connected with Chad Allen on an 11 yard completion and his third touchdown went to Stewart on a swing pass which covered 10 yards.
Sap threw for 69 yards in the win completing 4-of-5 with no interceptions.
The final first half score came off the legs of Robert Keyes who found the end zone on an 8-yard score.
Ontario added another seven points in the third quarter when Josh Mejia got in on the action with a 40 yard scamper.
Haueter improved his PAT to 7-for-7, and ended the night with a 10-for-10 performance.
In the final frame, the Tigers poured salt on the White Buffalos’ wound with three more scores.
The first came when Chris Paulsen scored on a one yard run, then Ray Rodriguez also scored on a one yard run.
Madras found the end zone late in the game with a 6-yard pass to the corner of the end zone with 1:28 to play.
Ontario added its last score when Madras tried an onside kick and D.J. Clayton showed off his hand and picked up the bouncing pigskin and returned it to the Madras 12 yard line setting up the final score, which came on the legs of Jordan Lang who punched the ball into the end zone with :31 left.
Following the game, Madras running back James Rodriguez said, “If Ontario meets up with Sisters in the playoffs, Ontario will roll them.”
Madras lost to Sisters earlier in the year 60-20.
“You guys (Ontario) are way more physical, stronger and faster than Sisters,” Rodriguez said.
Only time will tell.
First the Tigers have to handle what is at hand and that will be Baker this Friday.
