Ontario girls soccer team one better than Mac-Hi

Ontario’s Leslie Gonzalez (5) makes a move on a Mac-Hi defender during the first half of Saturday’s Greater Oregon League girls soccer match in Ontario. The Lady Tigers won 3-2.
Ontario - The Lady Tiger soccer team hosted conference foe Mac-Hi Saturday. Ontario jumped out to quick 1-0 lead when Kim Boyd, who returned to action for the first time since suffering a ankle injury, found the net one minute into the game.

The Lady Tigers extended their lead midway through the opening quarter when Boyd scored her second goal of the day.

Mac-Hi cut the lead on half on a penality kick, but before the opening half came to an end, Shauna McAvoy got in on the action.

“She (McAvoy) scored a beautiful goal. She was in the right place at the right time and lofted the ball just over the goalie’s hands into the net,” Ontario coach Stacey Captein said.

Mac-Hi added a goal in the second half, but then the Lady Tiger defense took over and kept the Pioneers from mounting any more threats.

Ontario goal keeper Megham Schram had an easy day at the office, only having to make four saves in the game, while this was untrue for the a Mac-Hi goalie as she had leather flying all around her the entire game. Ontario launched 18 shots on goal.

“As a whole, we played great defense. The girls worked thier tails off and I am proud of them,” the coach said.

The Lady Tigers will travel to Baker Thursday. Last season, Ontario defeated Lady Bulldogs twice, but Captein said Baker likes to play rough.

“They are a physical team. They will push, shove and bump just to see how much they can get away with,” Captein said.

The coach said her game plan going in will be to pass the ball more and make Baker do all the running. Kickoff for the game will be at 3 p.m.

The boys soccer team was shut out by La Grande 3-0 on Saturday.
