Ontario - The Treasure Valley Community College men’s and women’s soccer team enjoyed a solid weekend of at-home soccer action .
The men tied with Everett 0-0 and blasted past Skagit Valley Community College 7-0 Saturday on the campus of TVCC in Ontario.
TVCC’s Daniel Burnham leads the team with 12 goals and two assists and teammate Cesar Sanchez has 10 goals and two assists, for the Chukars who are third in the league with 31 goals scored. The defense and goalkeepers have also played tough allowing only seven goals while pitching five shutouts.
The Chukars (7-1-1) overall are ranked No. 6 in the latest NWAACC Horizon Air coaches poll, after they were previously unranked.
Clark Community College (8-0-2) is ranked No. 1 after receiving four first-place votes and Walla Walla Community College (6-0-3) is ranked No. 2, followed by Highline (5-1-2), Pierce (4-1-3) and Spokane (6-2-1).
“I don’t really care about making the polls. It’s nice, but our goal is to make the playoffs,” TVCC head coach Ryan Masingill said. “As long as we’re in the top-3 in the east, that’s all I am hoping for. They’re all pretty good players. We have the right players on the field and they like each other.”
The Lady Chukars, off the heels of a pair of shutout wins over Everett (2-0) and Skagit Valley (7-0) during a weekend twinbill have also enjoyed a solid start to their season. The Chukars are third place in the NWAACC’s Eastern Division with a 6-3 overall record and are currently ranked No. 8.
Heather Kopecky leads the Chukars with six goals, Chelslie Donaldson has five and Hope Powell has four goals for TVCC which ranks seventh in the scoring and third in defense allowing nine goals in their nine games.
“They have exceeded expectations,” Masingill said of the women’s team. “My goal has been the same, just finishing in the top-3. Their learning curve has been a little steeper coming into this year.”
Last season, Masingill inherited much of his roster, but has been able to bring in players that can make a difference for the upstart TVCC program.
He said the job now is to sustain the success.
“It was my goal to be successful,” Masingill said. “Did I expect to do it? I would say I hoped to, but didn’t expect to. What I would like is sustained success rather then be a flash in the pan. You hear about plenty of coaches that have one good recruiting class, they have a good season and you never hear from them again. The challenge is having two good years in a row. I would like to get the first one in the books first before we talk about two in a row.”
Walla Walla (9-0-0) is ranked No. 1 after receiving six first-place votes and the Warriors are followed by Clackamas (8-2), Columbia Basin (8-0), Clark (6-2-1) and Highline (6-1-1).
The Chukars hit the field again at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. tonight against Spokane.
