| Ontario’s Alla Dzhidzhiyeshvili battles through a thick blanket of defense against Weiser Tuesday. The Lady Tigers played the Lady Wolverines to a 1-1 tie in a game where Ontario played its athletes in new positions . |
Fruitland - Once again the Fruitland Lady Grizzlies soccer team came out on top, and improved to 11-0 on the season with a 2-0 shutout over Payette Monday evening.
Fruitland scored a goal in each half of play, but did not lack in shots on goal as the Lady Grizzlies fired off 40 shots to the Lady Pirates 16.
“I felt we dominated the first half of the game,” head coach Frank Teunissen said. “The second half was a lot closer. Payette is a very good team.”
Bridgette Teunissen scored the first goal for the Grizzlies as she got an assist from Jessica Torrey.
Fruitland’s second goal, was scored by Torrey and assisted by Teunissen. The coach said he was pleased with the play of Jamie Farmer and Becca Davis.
“They both did a good job. Becca, is usually not a starter, but she matched up well against Payette.”
Teunissen expects the district play to be just as intense as what the team is facing now.
“I think when we go to district, we pretty much have to expect the same thing, and that is tight attacking in by the goal, and tightly played defense.” he said.
Teunissen said the reason for the team’s success is they are playing as a team and the girls are all getting along.
Gordon Peterson, Payette’s head coach, said the Lady Pirates need to take advantage of the weapons they have and take advantage of the opportunities given to them.
“I felt we had the momentum in the second half, but we could not score,” Peterson said.
The coach added he is glad his team does not like to lose.
“It is good they do not like to lose. They are making progressive steps towards improvement.”
He praised the play of his freshman goal keeper Brandy Blackburn. “I was pleased with her. She is facing a lot of pressure but she is playing well,” Peterson said.
Fruitland will host Weiser Thursday in conference action. The Lady Grizzlies are 7-0 in conference play. Payette falls to 4-6-1 on the season and to 3-3 in conference play. Thursday, the Lady Pirates will travel to Homedale to try and get above the 500 mark in conference play.
