New Plymouth
The New Plymouth Pilgrims tried to take the season sweep of the Vale Viking volleyball team Monday evening, but Vale had other ideas.
Earlier in the year, New Plymouth defeated Vale in four games in Vale, but on Monday, the Lady Vikings made sure it did not happen again.
New Plymouth began the night out right with a first game 25-20 win, but the Vikings came back with a 25-21 win to even the match.
Game three went to New Plymouth, 25-16, and the fourth game went to Vale with a 25-10 win, forcing the fifth and final game for the match. Vale squeaked out the win, 15-11.
Leading Vale in kills was Katy Lutjens with 12, and she added 6 kill blocks, while teammate Kelcie Dalman logged eight kills and four kill blocks.
Sam Kamo tallied 17 digs, Heather Barras logged 16 digs and Ashley Morcom dug 15 digs in the win.
Vale head coach Mary Ann Standage said her team fought hard and battled all night against the Pilgrims.
But the coach still has a few concerns with her squad. She said they need to be more explosive in the transition game, and they still need to improve on coming together.
Vale will host Ontario at 7 p.m. Thursday as the Vikings seek pay back from an earlier five-game loss in Ontario.
