Ontario - The Ontario Tiger football team pounded the 4A Middleton Vikings Friday night at Tiger Stadium 47-6. Ontario wasted very few opportunities as they picked off Viking quarterback Skylark Davis four times, two resulting in touchdowns.
This marks the second straight week were the Tiger starting defense pitched a shutout over their opponent.
In both games, the visiting foe scored late in the game off the second and third string players.
“We came out sluggish on defense tonight, and I did not like their attitude in the first couple of drives,” Tiger head coach Randy Waite said. “But they settled down and did a good job the rest of the game.”
The Tigers got the board on their second possession of the game, after the Tiger defense forced the Vikings to a four and out.
And only one play was needed. Jake Turner got the hand off and turned in an 80-yard jaunt for the games first score.
The point after attempt was mishandled, but Tiger quarterback Bryson Sap scrambled for the two point conversion to give the home team an 8-0 lead with 2:22 remaining in the first quarter.
Late in the second quarter, Tiger kicker Jacob Haueter booted a 33 yard field goal with 1:01 left to play, boosting Ontario’s lead to 11-0. Haueter missed an earlier attempt of 33 yards.
Ontario was not satisfied with the 11 point cushion. On their first possession of the second half, Ontario’s offensive juggernaut went to work.
Starting at their own 33 yard line, the Tigers needed only three plays to find paydirt.
The drive was capped off with an impressive 53 yard touchdown run by Loren Stewart.
Haueter's kick made the score 18-0.
On the second Tiger possession, they needed only two plays to score. The Tigers took over on downs, after the Vikings failed to convert a punt attempt which the snap sailed over the punter head. Ontario began this drive on the Viking 11 yard line. Sap called his own number on the second and 11, and he found the end zone on a keeper extending the Tiger lead to 25-0 following Haueter’s kick.
Stewart added a one yard run early in the fourth and Ryan Laubacher added to that score with a 23 yard catch and run to put Ontario way out in front, 40-0.
The Laubacher score came off a triple reverse pass and Laubacher found himself all alone in the end zone when he made the catch.
The Tigers final score came at the 6:57 mark when Mejia scampered around the left side for and 23 yard score.
Late in the game, Middleton managed a score off an 80-yard quarterback sweep with 6:19 to play.
In all the Tigers pounded out 475 yards of total offense, 331 of those yards coming from the running game.
“We have a lot of weapons and a lot of kids that can make plays, and we are just hoping that will continue,” Waite said.
The Tigers will hit the road this Friday with a trip to Vale in a brutal rivalry game. Vale has won the last two meetings, and Waite knows this game will be a battle. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
