Fruitland netters knock off Baker



Baker ” Kylee Nawahine racked up 15 kills, 12 digs and four service aces to lead the Fruitland volleyball team to the 3-1 win over Baker City Tuesday in non-league volleyball action in Baker City.

The Grizzlies overcame a sluggish start and were immediately behind the eight-ball after suffering a 25-22 loss in the opener.

But Fruitland would rally and win the second game 25-19 and dominated the third game by the count of 25-7. The Grizzlies polished of the Bulldogs with a hard-fought 30-28 win the decisive fourth game.

Nawahine was followed up Michelle Meine, who had nine kills, Melissa Pennecard tallied 23 assists and Bailee Olson chalked up 11 digs.

“The first game was just great volleyball,” Fruitland head coach Lisa O’Neil said. “There were great rallies and great action. Both teams played phenomenal. In the second and third games our passing was better. The girls played really consistent.”

The Grizzlies (2-0 overall) travels for the Twin Falls Volleyball tournament starting Saturday.

Parma

Parma’s Kali Roche had eight kills, seven digs and four service aces to lead the Panthers to the 3-0 sweep over Nyssa in non-league volleyball action Tuesday in Parma.

The Panthers and the Bulldogs played close to the vest in the opener, with Parma winning 25-22. In the second game, Parma won 25-21 and they completed the sweep with a 25-14 win to send the Bulldogs packing.

Becca Leavitt had 10 assists and teammate Whitney Rohrbacher had eight kills, six digs and a block to lead Parma.

“I thought we played pretty good,” Parma head coach Jeana Critchfield said. “We controlled the ball well and played well. We’re continuing to improve.”

Nyssa was led by Kimber Wagstaff and Karina Armenta, who each had four kills apiece, while Katie Booth chipped in nine assists and Mandie Widmer added four digs.

“We actually did OK,” Nyssa head coach Jessica Rodriguez said. “We let them beat us with our own mistakes. I was actually happy because we would dig ourselves a hole and climb back out of it. We’re still learning to play together and play varsity volleyball, but we’ll get there.”

Nyssa (0-1 overall) hosts Cole Valley Christian Thursday, while Parma (2-0 overall) next hosts Homedale Thursday.

Adrian

Paige Branstiter tallied 16 kills, five aces and a block to lead Adrian to the three-game sweep over Marsing Tuesday in non-league volleyball action in Adrian.

The Antelopes had their toughest challenge in the opener as they fought to a 31-29 win. In the second game Adrian easily won 25-15 and completed the sweep with a 25-22 win in the third game.

Branstiter was followed up by McKenzie Purnell, who had 10 assists, four blocks and two kills, while teammate Kassi Daugherty added eight assists.

“This was a nice season opener,” Adrian head coach Aimee Goss said. “Marsing did a great job of serving and we were really challenged at times. I was happy with the way that the girls stuck in there even at tight moments in the match. We are working on coming together as a team and tonight was a great start.”

Adrian (1-0 overall) next hosts North Powder Friday and heads to the Cove tournament Saturday.

Vale

The New Plymouth volleyball team opened some eyes Tuesday posting an impressive four-game win over Vale in non-league volleyball action in Vale.

The Vikings won the opener 27-25 but the Pilgrims bounced back in a big way.

New Plymouth won the second game 25-21 and cinched the third game with a 25-17 win.

The Pilgrims put Vale away with a 25-18 win in the decisive fourth game.

Shianne Edmunson had nine kills, Alisha Shipman had 17 assists and teammate Rebecca McConaha added a 23 digs.

“They really justed started working the basics and the fundamentals,” New Plymouth head coach paula Leppert said. “They took good passes and turned it in to great kills. They were agressive and real focused on doing the little things and doing them well.”np at Vale
