| Nampa Christian’s Kayla Vander Stelt sends a kill shot over the net as Ontario’s Chelsea Skeen tries to block the shot. Nampa Christian defeated Ontario in two games, 25-23 in both and went on to sweep the Weiser Tri-Match Tuesday. |
Weiser ” Nampa Christian was the big winner at the Weiser Tri-match Tuesday evening with a clean sweep over Ontario and Weiser.
“We’ve seen Weiser earlier in the year, and they are much improved over the past two weeks,” Nampa Christian head coach Leslie Hughes said. “As for Rod’s team (Ontario) I think those girls are just young, but they have some big hitters.”
Nampa Christian improves to 6-4 overall.
After suffering back-to-back two point losses to Nampa Christian, the Ontario Lady Tiger volleyball team bounced back with a 2-1 win over host Weiser Tuesday evening.
Nampa Christian pulled off the sweep with a 2-0 win over Weiser, 25-21 and 25-18, then swept Ontario by the score of 25-23 in both games.
“Losing the first one (opening match against Nampa Christian), two close games. We let them get up 9-3, we came back and to lose that game I think took something out of us mentally,” head volleyball coach for Ontario Rod Williams said.
The Lady Tigers trailed early in both matches to Nampa Christian, and in both games, battled back. In Game 2 of the match, Ontario and Nampa Christian exchanged the lead eight times.
With the score tied at 14, Nampa Christian went on a 3-0 run. Ontario fought back within one point 18-17, before the Lady Trojans outscored them down the stretch 7-6 for the 25-23 win.
“Nampa Christian always brings a good team with a lot of height,” Williams said.
In the Lady Tigers second match of the night against Weiser, Ontario came out fired up and attacking the net.
Even though Weiser took an early lead, it did not deter the Lady Tigers determination.
Trailing 7-3 early, Ontario settled in and rallied off six points to Weiser’s two to tie the contest at nine.
The two teams exchanged points through out the match. With the game tied at 20, Ontario rallied late to outscore Weiser 5-2 for their first win of the night.
In game 2, Ontario jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, and later lead by six with the score 15-9 in what looked like an easy win for the Lady Tigers.
But the lack of attack by Ontario allowed Weiser to battle back.
Late in the game, Weiser tied Ontario at 24, then battled to the end to pick up the come from behind win 28-26.
The tie breaking contest, only played to 15, was closely contested as both squads traded points early. Weiser took a brief 9-8 lead before Ontario sealed the deal 15-11.
“You have to give Weiser credit. They were not letting the ball hit the floor no matter what we did,” Williams said. “We were having a tough time getting the ball on the floor. They (Weiser) were playing good defense.”
“We missed a lot of serves, and when you miss your serves the other team doesn’t even have to try. Those are free points and we have to work on that,” the coach lamented.
“We are finally glad to be playing instead of practicing against each other.”
Ontario begins the season 1-1 and will host Vale Thursday and Williams said he will need his team to attack better in this game.
“But that all starts with passing. If we get a good pass, it makes the setters job easy and we can than get a good hit.”
In the first match of the evening, Weiser hosted Nampa Christian and Weiser coach Chris Courter said, “Against Nampa Christian we were not serving very hard and we had trouble passing. We were more consistent against Ontario than what we were against Nampa.”
