New Plymouth - New Plymouth scored on its first and last possession Friday, but everything else was owned by Nathan Hughes and the Filer Wildcats.
Hughes threw a touchdown pass and ran for two more to lead Filer to the 31-13 drubbing of the hapless Pilgrims Friday in nonleague football action at Pilgrim Field in New Plymouth.
Hughes went 14-of-29 for 183 yards and also carried the ball 17 times for 102 yards for the Wildcats, who outgained New Plymouth 429-159.
“Nathan Hughes, he’s pretty tough,” Filer head coach Jaxon Schweikert said. “He’s the real deal. He’s just mentally a tough, tough kid. Physically, he’s very tough and he’s a gifted player. We’re pretty hard to defend when he’s throwing the ball well.”
The combination of Easton Foust and Jaimie Brown connected on the games first play from scrimmage on a 51-yard touchdown pass and New Plymouth jumped out to a 6-0 lead.
Brown broke past double coverage grabbed the ball and coasted down the right sideline for the score.
The Wildcats answered right back on its first possession, working a 5-play, 75 yard drive, capped by a 20-yard scamper by Hughes which evened the count at 6.
New Plymouth would have eight more first half possessions, gained 63 yards and had only three first downs.
In the second quarter, Filer took the lead with a 2-yard run by Hughes, a 30-yard touchdown pass from Hughes to teammate Brodie Parrott and Dustin Morris capped the half with a 35-yard interception return for a score.
The touchdown pass and interception return came 15 seconds apart and gave Filer a comfortable 24-6 cushion.
The Pilgrims offense still couldn’t find a groove in the second half as they had three drives end with punts and three other end with interceptions.
The Pilgrims totaled 18 yards rushing and 27 yards through the air in the second half.
Justin Peterson led the New Plymouth ground game with six carries for 15 yards, while Brown had five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown.
Foust was sacked four times and went 8-of-33 for 141 yards with four picks.
“We need to run the ball better and I don’t know what to do about that right now,” New Plymouth head coach Josh White said. “We’re not moving people off the line, so we’ll see what we’ll need to do there.”
The Wildcats then capped its scoring on its second possession of the second half after a 11-play, 78-yard drive that chewed up 4:05 off the clock. The drive was capped by a 13-yard touchdown run by Tyler Kreft and Filer saw the lead swell to 31-6.
Kreft finished with 54 yards on the ground, while teammate Ricky Fernandez caught three balls for 104 yards.
With 1:20 left in the game, New Plymouth’s Josh Bergin found paydirt with a 25-yard punt return for touchdown.
With one game in the books, White said he and the coaching staff will look at film and get back to work in time for the next game.
“We have a lot to work on, so we’ll go back and start working,” White said. “We know there are some things we need to work on like our pass rush and running the football.”
The Pilgrims (0-1 overall) next travel to Homedale Friday.
