Weiser - The Weiser girls soccer team had a tough task against 4A Nampa Saturday, but walked away with a positive glimpse into the future.
Playing with three freshmen, three seniors and without some offensive firepower, the Wolverines couldn’t break through in their 1-0 loss to the Bulldogs Saturday in Weiser.
Midway through the opening stanza, Nampa’s Amber Zachariasen took a pass from teammate Alexcia Nielsen and tallied the game’s only goal.
The Wolverines still generated 23 shots on goal and were led by sophomore Emma Coats, who peppered the Nampa goalie with seven shots. Weiser goalie Trina Curtis made 13 saves and kept her team in the game with many crucial stops.
“I felt good about today’s game,” Weiser’s second-year head coach Damon Courtois said. “They played well. The girls intensity level was up and the desire was there. I felt like we outshot and outhustled them. I’m getting tired of losing by one goal. Overall, I thought they played well. Playing against a bigger school, they competed well. They should be proud and hold their heads up high.”
Weiser (0-1 overall) next travels to Nampa Monday.
Nampa 5, Weiser 0
Playing without many of their top guns, the Weiser boys soccer team had its hands full with the Nampa Bulldogs.
Nampa jumped out to a 2-0 lead and turned it on with three more in the second half to win 5-0 in nonleague soccer action Saturday in Weiser.
Ian Muir made eight saves and the Wolverines had three golden opportunities to score in the second half but couldn’t hit the back of the net.
Armando Sosa and Eric Bokides had one-on-one chances but Sosa’s shot glanced off the Nampa goalkeeper and Bokides’ shot went wide.
Eddie Ixta also had a chance to tickle the twine but his shot also missed the mark.
“They played real well offensively and defensively,” Weiser head coach Kathy Bokides said. “Their keeper did a good job. We never let down. Our opportunities were there.
“The second half they made impressive passes and many shots went wide or over the goal. We did a good job. Once they come in we’ll do well.”
Weiser (0-1 overall) next travels to Nampa Thursday.
