Fruitland - After battling Caldwell for 40 minutes and trailing just 1-0 at halftime, the Fruitland boys soccer team appeared to be in a position to give the visiting 5A school a run.
The Cougars, however, had other ideas, scoring four second-half goals in a 15-minute span to break the game open and defeat the Grizzlies 5-0 Friday in Fruitland.
“First half they did really good, it was 1-0,” Fruitland head coach Emilio Carbajal said of his team. “I thought we did pretty decent till we ran out of gas in the second half. If we had fresh legs I think we would’ve stayed with them. They just kept bringing new guys in there. Their numbers wore us down.”
Caldwell grabbed that early lead just 12 minutes into the game on a goal by Edgar Valera.
The score remained 1-0 until the 49th minute, when Jesus Verdugo scored on a pass from Valera to put Caldwell up 2-0. Four minutes later, Verdugo hit a streaking Jose Lazo, who scored from about 15 yards out. Jose Amaya added a goal less then ten minutes later, and Verdugo capped the scoring with a penalty kick in the 64th minute to give the Cougars an insurmountable 5-0 lead.
“First half we did come out flat,” Caldwell head coach Lenny Foster said. “(It) was not the intensity level that we wanted to play. Beginning of the second half was an improvement on that. Halftime talk (we) simplified things, made sure we’re playing simple, effective soccer instead of trying to do too much individually.”
Meanwhile, Fruitland struggled to find any offensive flow, especially in the second half, as they mustered just a handful of shot attempts against Caldwell goalkeeper Mike Garza.
“They weren’t passing. They were just playing kickball,” Carbajal said. “They couldn’t get any runs at all. We got some speed, just got to work on a little bit more conditioning too.”
Fruitland had a mini-flurry of shots in the closing minutes, including a kick by Joe Rodriguez that hit the crossbar, but failed to put the ball in the net.
Mark Rodriguez recorded eight saves in the loss for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies ran into another tough opponent Saturday and saw a 1-0 halftime lead against Columbia quickly vanish as they lost 5-1.
Mario Hernandez scored Fruitland’s lone goal in the 20th minute on a pass from Carlos Pantoja and Travis Stice had 10 saves in net for the Grizzlies.
“We could not get anything going our way in the second half,” Carbajal said of the Saturday matchup. “We just ran out of juice.”
Fruitland (0-3-1 overall) next battles Homedale Thursday at home.
