| Nyssa city officials are preparing to move from the current City Hall to the former Idaho Power building (above) situated at 301 Main St. The current City Hall facility will continue to house the Nyssa Police Department and the Nyssa City Council chambers. |
NYSSA — August will be moving month in Nyssa as city officials prepare to relocate to a new City Hall.
Nyssa city leaders will take over the former Idaho Power office building before the end of the month, but even though the new digs will be available, officials are not entirely abandoning the current City Hall.
Overall, it will be a short move as the city business offices will be relocated to the Idaho Power building at the corner of South Third and Main Street.
The Nyssa Police Department will then move into the downstairs portion of the old city hall structure.
City officials will move into their new offices after the wiring for the new phone system and the computer hook-ups to be completed, Nyssa interim city manager Roberta Donovan said. Moving out of the old building and into the new city hall will be the city manager, city clerk, city recorder and the utility staff, Donovan said. The city council chambers will remain upstairs in the current city hall, above the police department, she said, and city is planning to rent out the space now occupied by the police.
“We definitely own the building now,” Donovan said, referring to former power company office.
The purchase price was $65,000, she said, which is a lot less than building a new structure which she thought the city would eventually be forced to do.
“We don’t have enough space,” Donovan said, who cited lack of room as the reason for the move.
Nyssa Mayor Susan Walker said it’s about 900 square of feet space, where the city offices are now, compared to 2,200 square feet where they will be.
“I’m excited,” she said. “It’s going to be a great move for the city.”
Donovan agreed.
“It will be much better,” Donovan said of the move, which she hopes will take place around Aug. 23 or 24, she added. “It’s (the building) pretty ready to go.”
After being vacated by Idaho Power Company, the facility was the location of Malheur Memorial Health Clinic until it was moved to its new facility across from the Nyssa Post Office. Walker said the city was approached by Idaho Power about its building at the first of the year, and the city and company officials have been talking since. The City Council gave final approval to the transaction in July.
The money to buy the building came from the city’s state revenue sharing fund, the business development fund and the reserve fund, she said.
