| The display tables and shelves in the Red Barn have recently been set up and are ready to go as the exhibits for the Malheur County Fair will begin to roll in Monday morning. The fair begins Tuesday at the fairgrounds in Ontario. |
Ontario - Opening day of the 98th Malheur County Fair is just two days away, and event staff is busy putting together final preparations.
Longtime fair secretary manager Janeen Kressly said she wants to stress some important deadlines that are different from recent years.
“Our biggest thing we want people to know is that the exhibits come in from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday,” she said.
The only exception, Kressly said, is the flowers exhibit, which can come in Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Kressly said there are also discounted carnival day passes available at Red Apple Marketplace in Ontario. Prices for the tickets are $15, cut down from the $24 charge at the carnival gate. The offer runs through Tuesday. Kressly also pointed out that the Fair Run, sponsored by the Fit For Life Health Club, is slated Aug. 4. Interested individuals can register up to the day of the race at Fit For Life, situated at 160 N. Oregon St. in Ontario. Call (541) 889-8877 for more information. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Kressly said everything is on schedule for the fair’s opening day Tuesday.
“We got a lot of groups that are down here setting up and working,” she said.
The fair gates open at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The grounds remain open until 10 p.m. on opening day. Each day after, the fair runs from 8 a.m. to midnight. The annual Lions breakfast is set for Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. The carnival is not open the first day but opens Wednesday at 4 p.m.
The carnival starts at 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and begins at noon Saturday. The Steve’s Hometown Toyota team roping event takes place Thursday at 7 p.m., and the rodeo runs Friday and Saturday night starting at 8 p.m.. General admission is $5 all day, and free for youth 5 and younger. Tuesday’s admission is $2 and also free for 5 and younger. Weeklong passes are also available at the main gate for $15.
