OREGON - Suit claims 9-1-1 mishandled call from murdered Ore. woman
MEDFORD (AP) — The family of a woman found murdered on Interstate 5 two years ago has filed suit against Medford, claiming she bled to death because the city’s 9-1-1 center delayed transmission of her call for help.
Jose Meraz is seeking $3 million for the alleged wrongful death of his ex-wife, Ana Meraz, who had a 12-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter. See story Page A3.

Man fatally shot at south Idaho supermarket
BOISE (AP) — The Twin Falls Police Department and the Idaho State Police released no further details Sunday about a fatal shooting that involved two police officers who responded to a shoplifting call at a grocery store.
So far, Twin Falls police have only said that officers were called to a WinCo Foods store in Twin Falls about 2 p.m. Saturday after employees there detained an alleged shoplifter.
About 10 to 15 minutes later, one of the officers at the scene requested an ambulance for a person who had been shot.

Texas joins global efforts to boost fresh water

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — On a one-acre site alongside a string of shrimp boats docked on the Brownsville ship channel stands a $2.2 million assembly of pipes, sheds, and humming machinery — Texas’ entree into global efforts to make seawater suitable to drink.
Opening a small spigot at the end of a fat pipe, plant operator Joel del Rio fills a plastic glass with what he says will taste ‘‘like regular bottled water.’’

Citing little-known law, Illinois man sues over lost love
CHICAGO (AP) — Stealing someone’s heart can cost you: Just ask German Blinov.
A Cook County jury ordered Blinov to shell out $4,802 last week after he was sued by a husband from a Chicago suburb for stealing the affections of the man’s wife.
Arthur Friedman used a little-known state law to mount the legal attack against Blinov. The alienation of affection law, one of eight across the country, lets spouses seek damages for the loss of love.
