New Plymouth - From ducks to cows to chickens, it was a day full of family activities at the annual Horseshoe Days celebration at the Payette County Fairgrounds in New Plymouth Saturday.
Once a well-known area celebration, Horseshoe Days faded away but was resurrected in 2003, Horseshoe Days Organizer Beth Earles said.
While some events are expected, like the annual library book sale and the New Plymouth Chamber of Commerce silent auction, others are more nontraditional, starting with the Noble Ditch Duck Race at 10:30 a.m., where for a dollar you adopt a “lucky” plastic duck to be sent off down the canal in hopes of claiming first place.
Saturday, first prize went to Austin Sobralski’s No. 449 duck. Trudie Thawley, 3MB Specialties, Jim Smith, John Clauch, Laura Hinson, Shirley Johnson, Bertine Paynter, Noah Vantrease and Kenny Edmiston rounded out the top 10. The award for the last duck across the finish line went to duck No. 61 — Brian Olsin.
Horseshoe Days offered two other incomparable activities: cow pie and chicken turd bingo. In cow pie bingo, participants purchase a $5 marked bingo square in an enclosed pasture. Three calves were then set loose in the field, and the owner of the first “cow-pie’d” square takes home the $125 prize.
The chickens conduct a similar scenario, only squares are $1 and the winner walks away with $25.
Earles said less people attended the event than in previous years, and Payette Kiwanis Club member Lonnie Tuckness, who operated a ring toss booth, agreed the morning was slow.
“Right now is the busiest it’s been,” he said around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. “Early it was a little slow, but it’s picked up.” Horseshoe Days also included the Treasure Valley Antique Power Association Tractor Pull, the Outlaw Lawn Dragster Races, live entertainment, vendors and horse and pony rides.
