expected for dams plan
PORTLAND (AP) — Operators of the Columbia Basin hydroelectric dams told a federal judge Wednesday they do not expect to make the kinds of major changes in their strategy to boost salmon returns that are being sought by the state of Oregon and some Indian tribes.

SALEM (AP) — Oregon voters will decide this fall whether to substantially change Measure 37, the property compensation law they approved in 2004. But legislators in Salem are trying to decide what happens to the law between now and November.
Universal health plan wins Senate’s backing
SALEM (AP) — A bill setting up the framework for universal health care was approved Wednesday by the Oregon Senate.
The measure, endorsed on a 22-7 vote, establishes a seven-member board that will propose an overhaul of Oregon’s health care system to make it affordable, effective and universal.

E. Idaho tribe opposes land swap involving J.R. Simplot Co.
POCATELLO (AP) — Officials with the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes are opposing a proposed land swap between J.R. Simplot Co. and the Bureau of Land Management, fearing the company will use the land it receives for phosphate mine waste that could degrade local air quality and pollute the Portneuf River.

Utah lawmakers target elderly drivers
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A couple who lost their son and 5-year-old granddaughter when they were hit by a car as they walked to school urged lawmakers to support a proposed bill that would allow for confidential reporting of elderly drivers who shouldn’t be allowed to drive.
