Ontario - Alycia Adams has traveled all over the state of Oregon as the Oregon High School Rodeo Association’s Queen.
Adams, 18, Ontario, was crowned as the OHSRA 2007 Queen at the OHSRA Finals Rodeo in June. In order to become queen, Adams said she had to complete two horsemanship patterns, prepare a speech, answer an impromptu question, take a written test, complete an interview and do some modeling at the finals rodeo.
Adams also volunteered her time doing various tasks to show the judges her personality. After all that, the judges chose Adams to represent the OHSRA.
“It (volunteering) showed how outgoing you are and how you present yourself,” Adams said.
Adams became a member of the Malheur County High School Rodeo Club in her sophomore year at Ontario High School. Horses have always been a part of her life, and she said high school rodeo fit in with her future goals. As a member of the team, Adams competes in goat tying and pole bending events. Pole bending is an event in which riders weave their horses through vertical poles, she said.
Adams, who graduated Sunday, plans to attend Treasure Valley Community College in the fall for her general education requirements before moving on to the College of Southern Idaho. CSI has a great veterinary technician program, she said, and eventually she wants to do equine chiropractic work.
A new queen will be crowned at the 2007 OHSRA Finals Rodeo in Klamath Falls in June. Adams said she has enjoyed being queen and representing the OHSRA throughout the state, and especially relished the opportunity to attend the National High School Rodeo Association Finals Rodeo in Springfield, Ill., last July.
“I wanted to represent the organization and be a part of the organization in some way,” Adams said.
