Local tennis teams compete in districts

Fruitland - With several dominating performances and a few surprises, the District III tennis tournament began Thursday afternoon, with opening round and quarterfinal matches in Fruitland, Payette and Parma.

In girls singles, Parma’s Kali Roche swept through her quarterfinal match with Ann Westfall of Fruitland, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Kaitlin Farmer of Fruitland also won her quarterfinal match up, defeating Weiser’s Jordan Zeller 6-2, 6-1.

Bryant Timmons of Parma quickly dispatched of Weiser’s Kevin Bergquist in boy singles play, winning 6-0, 6-0. Fruitland’s Cameron Kinzer also had his way in his quarterfinal match, defeating Cortlyn Davies of Weiser 6-0, 6-1. Ingon Rodrigues of Payette pulled a shocker in the bottom half of the bracket, defeating Parma’s Rance Portenier 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

In girls doubles, the team of Logan Smyser and Mckenzie Timmons from Parma had no problems with Weiser’s Mary Lancaster and Hallie Hopkins, winning their quarterfinal match 6-0, 6-0. Weiser’s Natalie Wilkins and Kasey Gibbs also won handily, and will face the Fruitland duo of Rachel Bratton and Bridgette Teunissen in the semifinals.

Jon Hensley and Ross Newman of Fruitland won another local showdown, defeating Weiser’s Grayson Duren and Jeff Gajda 6-2, 6-3. Derek Race and Anthony Velie of Parma pulled the upset of the day, going three sets to defeat Payette’s Steven and Marcus Heleker 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.

Terrell Timmons and Sam Frazier of Parma cruised into the semifinals of the mixed doubles bracket, defeating Fruitland’s Brant Schlaich and Michelle Meine 6-0, 6-2.

Tennis action continued early this morning with the consolation and semifinal match ups. The tournament concludes Saturday. with the championship matches in Parma at 10 a.m.
