ONTARIO - Most employees appreciate a pat on the shoulder every once in a while.
It may not be as nice as a day off, or a raise, but a shoeshine from the boss, followed by a hotdog and a cup of coffee are nice perks that scream appreciation.
This week, employees at Snake River Correctional Institution will be in the spotlight as part of National Correctional Employees Week. As an annual affair for as long as current SRCI management staff could recall, the appreciation week is no less special this time around. National Correctional Employees Week has burgeoned over the years, but there has always been some sort of recognition event, SRCI Spokeswoman Amber Campbell said. The worker week kicked off Monday morning with a heavy helping of patriotism at the state’s largest prison. The week began with a flag raising ceremony by the prison’s honor guard, followed by a passionate rendition of the national anthem and a moment of silence for the country’s military personnel.
Kettle Korn is on the docket this week at the prison, along with shoeshines, hamburger meals, hot dogs, fancy coffees, service award ceremonies and gift certificate drawings.
“A great job is being done by all here,” SRCI Superintendent Jean Hill said from a podium at the entrance of the administration building at the prison.
“We do work that can be tough,” Hill said, and she then thanked the employees who gathered outside Monday, while an inmate manned the sound system.
There are more than 850 employees at SRCI, and around 600 of those work in security, Campbell said.
The event is about more than just appreciation, it is also a way to promote networking, Campbell said.
“This week’s focus is on the work we do in the profession we’re in. It helps with camaraderie,” Campbell said.
The week’s festivities were funded through two union branches of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, as well as the SRCI Employee Fitness and Wellness Committee, Oregon Corrections Enterprises, and the SRCI Management Team, according to information provided by Campbell.

And this isn't "racist," because Islam is not a race, anymore than Communism or Nazism are races, both of which killed far fewer people than Islam.
Disgusting. "
