SALEM (AP) — About 2,000 immigration rights advocates — mostly Hispanic — rallied Tuesday in favor of both a pathway to U.S. citizenship and continued Oregon driving privileges for illegal immigrants. Many at the boisterous, peaceful rally carried American flags and signs that read ‘‘Oregon works because immigrants work’’ and ‘‘Immigration reform now!’’ See story Page A3.

State threatens to throttle Magic Valley groundwater users
TWIN FALLS (AP) — The head of Idaho’s water department says he’s will turn off groundwater pumps used by more than 700 Magic Valley farmers later this month if they fail to set aside additional water sought by two senior users. Idaho Water Resources Department Director David Tuthill said Monday he intends to issue a curtailment order on May 14 targeting 771 groundwater pumpers spread across 33,000 acres of the Magic Valley north of the Snake River. Bush vetoes troop-withdrawal bill in historic Iraq showdown
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush vetoed legislation to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq Tuesday night in a historic showdown with Congress over whether the unpopular and costly war should end or escalate. In only the second veto of his presidency, Bush rejected legislation pushed by Democratic leaders that would require the first U.S. combat troops to be withdrawn from Iraq by Oct. 1.

Woman who used snakes to hold police at bay receives probation
SUNBURY, Pa. (AP) — A woman accused of holding police at bay by brandishing poisonous snakes was sentenced to house arrest and probation.
‘‘I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind that night,’’ said Terry Jackson, 36, at her sentencing Monday.
Officers were trying to prevent the despondent woman from harming herself with a hunting knife when the confrontation took place Oct. 25. See story Page A7.
