Bulldog bats pound Marsing softball team

NYSSA - Jasmine Gomez went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Nyssa softball team to a 14-1 win over Marsing in nonleague softball action Monday in Nyssa.

The Bulldogs were on fire in the opening frame as they scored 10 times and coasted to the win from there. Nyssa then added two runs in the second inning and two more in the third inning to put the mercy rule into effect.

Kim Pett and Alisha Hittle each went 2-for-3 and teammates Becky Hernandez and Belinda Escobedo drove in two runs apiece.

Nyssa pounded out 10 hits, received eight walks and took advantage of five Husky errors.

All the offense was plenty for Noelle Burtlow (4-6), who tossed a complete-game four-hitter and struck out eight. Nyssa (5-11 overall, 0-4 EOL) next hosts Burns Friday.

Baker .............................. 16

Weiser .............................. 0

The Baker Bulldogs scored seven runs in the first and second innings and took advantage of 11 Weiser errors in its 16-0 drubbing of the Wolverines in nonleague softball action Monday in Baker.

Nicole Edwards lasted only one inning and gave up seven runs before she was replaced by Ashley Johnson, who promptly gave up seven runs in her first inning of work.

The Bulldogs were able to steal, bunt and get some clutch hits to do their damage.

Julia Vaughn, Tara Talbott and Valerie Freese all chipped in doubles for the Bulldogs, who pounded out eight hits total.

The Wolverines chalked up six hits, all by six different players.

Tiffany Nelson, Kassidy Pratt, Sam Larsen and Johnson all went 1-for-3 on the day.

“We had some kids that came through for us,” Weiser head coach Dale Emert said. “Angie Edwards, Meredith Clark and Tiffany Nelson all had solid games hitting the ball, so maybe we’ll snap out of the hitting doldrums and get going.”

Weiser (4-14 overall, 2-3 SRV) travels to McCall today.
