| Nyssa’s Smitty Hartley makes a return shot in his No. 1 doubles match against Weiser’s Grayson Duren and Jeff Gajda Monday during their nonleague tennis match in Weiser. Hartley and partner Mike Lucero lost their match, 6-0, 6-0. |
WEISER - Nyssa’s No. 2 doubles team of Carter Spear and Rene De La Cerda won their match in three grueling sets, but it wasn’t enough as the Weiser tennis team dominated the rest of the matches and won 9-1 over the Bulldogs Monday in nonleague tennis action in Weiser.
Spear and De La Cerda won the opening set 6-2, but the Weiser duo of Rayne Loomis and Kevin Bergquist rebounded with a 6-2 bout to knot the match at one apiece. In the decisive third set, both teams fought toe-to-toe and needed a tie-breaker set to decide the match. Spear and De la Cerda carded just enough points to come away with the win.
In girls singles, Weiser’s Jessie Perez defeated Nyssa’s Cynthia Arredondo 6-0, 6-2, and teammate Ashley Svedin took care of Nyssa’s Elvira Fuentes in her No. 2 singles match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Marybell Sanchez then completed the girls singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Aracely Mendez.
In girls doubles action, Weiser’s No. 1 singles pair of Natalie Wilkins and Kasey Gibbs had no problems at all with Nyssa’s Marshall Martinez and Kendra Clark, as they won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Mary Lancaster and Hallie Hopkins then followed up with a 6-0, 6-0 trouncing of Nyssa’s Kelcie Reece and Maricela Rogel in their No. 2 doubles match.
The Weiser boys continued their hot streak as they swept all three of their matches. Weiser’s Ike Sharp started things off with a 6-1, 6-0 win over David Durfee, and Cortlyn Davies followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Nyssa’s Mario Venegas. Weiser’s No. 3 single Rasmus Jacobson then completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Nyssa’s Luis Diaz. Grayson Duren and Jeff Gajda then added an exclamation point to the Wolverines’ successful day as they hardly broke a sweat in their 6-0, 6-0 win over Nyssa’s No. 1 doubles team of Mike Lucero and Smitty Hartley.
