Mariners pitcher drops the ball in loss

Minnesota Twins second baseman Luis Castillo (1) throws to first after forcing out Seattle Mariners’ Jose Guillen at second base in the second inning at a baseball game Tuesday in Seattle.
SEATTLE (AP) — Torii Hunter broke open the game with a fifth-inning grand slam, then left after bruising a shoulder while trying to catch a line drive in the Minnesota Twins’ 11-2 rout of the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.

Hunter injured his left shoulder while tumbling trying to make a catch of a sinking line drive by Jose Vidro in the sixth inning. The Twins said he is day to day.

Jeff Weaver (0-2), who won the World Series finale for St. Louis last October, allowed seven runs and 10 hits — seven for extra bases — in six innings. That was actually an improvement from his first start, when he gave up seven runs in two innings at Boston. His outing against Minnesota cut his ERA from 31.50 to 15.75.

Joe Mauer had three doubles and three RBIs, Jason Tyner doubled twice and had three hits, and Michael Cuddyer drove in three runs. Minnesota’s eight doubles tied a Twins record set against Boston on July 25, 1996, and the Twins outhit Seattle 15-10.

Ramon Ortiz (3-0) gave up two runs and eight hits in seven innings and has allowed five runs in 22 innings this year, a 2.05 ERA. Seattle’s runs came on homers by Ichiro Suzuki and Jose Lopez.

Rockies 5, Giants 3

Yorvit Torrealba’s three-run double off Kevin Correia capped a five-run eighth inning that carried host Colorado past San Francisco.

Matt Cain scattered two singles over seven shutout innings but remained winless despite a 1.80 ERA, thanks to a bullpen that squandered a 3-0 lead.

Steve Finley led off the eighth with a pinch-hit home run, his first with the Rockies. Garrett Atkins started a two-out rally with a single, and four batters later, Torrealba doubled to the wall in left off Correia (0-1).

Ramon Ramirez (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win, and Brian Fuentes finished for his third save.

Dodgers 6,

Diamondbacks 4

Juan Pierre doubled and tripled and scored three runs to lead visiting Los Angeles, which won for the 10th time in 12 games and swept a two-game series to take a 11/2 game lead over the second-place Diamondbacks.

With the game tied at 4-4 in the seventh, Pierre tripled off Tony Pena (0-1) to drive in a run, then raced home on shortstop Alberto Callaspo’s throwing error.

Blue Jays 2, Red Sox 1

Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-2) struck out 10 over six innings at Toronto but walked three batters in the fourth, including Gregg Zaun with the bases loaded after Lyle Overbay’s tying single.

Jason Frasor, taking over as closer while B.J. Ryan is sidelined by a sprained elbow, got four outs for his first save since Sept. 20, 2005, against Seattle.

Yankees 10, Indians 3

Called up from Double-A Trenton to fill a spot in New York’s injury-depleted rotation, Chase Wright (1-0) allowed three runs and five hits in five innings at Yankee Stadium to win his major league debut.

Alex Rodriguez hit his major league-leading eighth home run, and Jorge Posada and Doug Mientkiewicz also connected in the second inning off Jake Westbrook (0-2), who gave up eight runs and eight hits in 1 2-3 innings.

Athletics 4, Angels 1

Bobby Crosby, who entered with a .167 average, broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the fourth off Jered Weaver (0-1).

Chad Gaudin (1-0) allowed four hits in 7 2-3 innings at Oakland, including Maicer Izturis’ eighth-inning RBI double.

Weaver, who came off the disabled list before the game after recovering from biceps tendinitis, allowed four runs — three earned — and four hits in six innings.
