The Nyssa girls basketball team is headed to a state play-in game Saturday against Rainier after posting an improbable come-from-behind win Monday.

The Bulldogs erased a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit with a 22-7 run to come back and defeat Umatilla 53-50 in Monday's Eastern Oregon League tie-breaker game at Union High School.

The win and the berth came courtesy of senior guard Danielle Kurtz and the clutch free-throw shooting of the Bulldogs.

Kurtz scored eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter, and the Bulldogs dropped 13-of-18 free throws in the final eight minutes.

“The girls did a good job of taking the ball to the basket,” Nyssa head coach Gabe Fuentes said. “We got the ball inside to our post players and they did a good job of getting something out of it.”

Early on, the Vikings looked to have complete control of the game as they used a 14-0 second quarter run and led 29-21 at the half. In the first half, Umatilla used its high-pressure 1-3-1 trap defense and forced Nyssa into 19 turnovers.

“They came out ready to play,” Fuentes said. “They came out ready to win the game more than we did. They got after it.”

The Viking run continued in the third quarter as they outscored Nyssa 14-10 to lead 43-31 after three quarters of play.

Kurtz, who also dished out eight assists, was followed up by Chelsey Ramos, who tallied a team-high 14 points and four steals for Nyssa (6-19 overall, 5-6 EOL). Hailey Anderson added 11 points and nine boards, while teammate Lillyan Zittercob chipped in six points.

Umatilla (13-10 overall, 5-6 EOL) was led by Daniela Campos with 13 points, and teammate Aleah Phillips added 10.

Rainier (19-5 overall, 16-0 League) was the 3A Lewis and Clark League champion and is currently riding a 15-game winning streak. The time of the game will be announced.
