Jacob Haueter scored 23 points to lead the game, but the Ontario boys basketball team fell at the hands of Greater Oregon League opponent Baker 67-59 anyway Tuesday at Ontario High School.
Haueter was the only Tiger to have a significant impact on the scoreboard, hitting five shots from the field, including three 3's, and shooting a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line during the game.
Despite his team showing moments of solid play, Ontario head coach Scott Helmick said Baker's rebounding finally got the best of the Tigers in the second half, giving them plenty of opportunity to score from the paint.
“They really wore us down,” he said. “They got a lot of easy shots. It call came down to rebounding.”
After Baker opened the game with a comfortable 18-10 lead in the first quarter, Ontario never seriously challenged the Bulldogs, only coming as close as five points throughout the game.

While the Tigers closed the score to 34-28 going into the second half, Ontario's perimeter shots fell short in the second half, and the Tigers weren't able to gain significant ground.
The Bulldogs' increased their lead in the third quarter to 44-34, outscoring the Tigers 20-16. Their lead would have been more had Ontario's Josh Mejia not hit a 3-point field goal at the buzzer.
Although Baker's leading scorers got into foul trouble at the end of the third and into the fourth quarters, Baker was able to fend off Ontario, which outscored the Bulldogs 15-13 in the last stanza, including a layup at the buzzer by Bryson Sap to make the final score 67-59.
“They did what they needed to do to win,” Baker head coach Craig Woods said of Ontario, adding the Bulldogs' win came down to the rebounding and easy shots in the key.
The Bulldogs, tied for first in the GOL, were led by Grant Johnson with 17 points, while teammates Luke Sells and Matt Duman each put up 14.
Ontario (1-6 GOL, 7-15 overall) plays La Grande Friday at home.
