Wellsprings Assisted Living Center in Ontario played host to the Payette Friday Musicale Club recently when the group held its January meeting in “The Great Room” there.
A program entitled”Religious Music of Many Faiths” directed by Ilo Schmid at the grand piano and organ featured Bette and Joe Hopper of Fruitland on violin and guitar with their group, as well as TVCC vocalists Madison and Kylie Montee of New Plymouth. Residents of Wellsprings were on hand to welcome the club, hear the musical performance and enjoy the cookies and punch that followed.
An uplifting anthem, “On Eagles Wings,” was followed by sing-a-long hymns “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “Jesus Loves Me” and “Blessed Assurance.” “Morning Has Broken” was sung as a lovely duet by the Montee sisters, Madison and Kylie.
The story of St. Francis of Assisi 1182-1226 was told by Ilo Schmid, and those in attendance sang the beautiful “Prayer of St. Francis” written by John Greenleaf Whittier. More familiar to the audience was the grand finale “Onward Christian Soldiers,” which Schmid performed with a rousing tempo on the organ. Everyone joined in, including one 99-year-old Wellsprings resident, Helen Belford, who happens to be my mother.
Wanda Lehmkuhl, musicale president, presided at the board meeting which followed in an adjoining room. Lehmkuhl took over the job of president when Iran Trenkel resigned due to a conflicting job schedule. Also new to the board was Vice President Margaret Riggs.
Plans for the Musicale’s annual Founders Day Celebration were discussed and posters were distributed.
The annual event is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Payette First United Methodist Church, 502 N. 11th St., Payette.
Tickets for the gourmet brunch catered by Fawn’s Catering, Weiser, are $8, and the public is invited to attend.
“Sharing the Joy of Music” is the theme, and vocalists Ryan and Amy Olson of Boise will be featured in a program of music following the breakfast. For tickets, contact Kathy Borgholthaus at (208) 642-4161 by Feb. 7. The Friday Musicale, chartered in 1957, is affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs.
