The American Association of University Women will celebrate 125 years Tuesday.
Although many groups around the nation will celebrate, the Ontario branch of AAUW does not have any plans this year.
“As far as I know, there will be no celebration,” Nancy Yaeger, President of the Ontario Branch for AAUW, said.
The local branch has approximately 20 members and has switched from monthly meetings to quarterly meetings. Yaeger has been a part of the nonprofit organization for six years.
“I was wanting to get to know people,” she said. “We support women and women in education. We promote equity and life long education.”
The group recently ended its annual fall grapefruit sale Nov. 20. The sale supports a Treasure Valley Community College fund for student financial emergencies, Yaeger said. Ontario's AAUW also holds a program for Ontario Middle School's at-risk young women.
“Last year we featured the exchange student program,” Yaeger said.
The group also takes part in a get out and vote campaign and a spring time yard sale.
The Ontario branch is with the Oregon AAUW but those from surrounding areas are welcome to attend.
“We have several members from Payette,” Yaeger said. Part of the group's dues fund the state AAUW. For more information or to become a member, contact Lucy Hutchens at (541) 473-3540, or online at www.aauw-oregon.org/ONTARIO.ASP.
