All Ontario goalkeepers Sarah Wharton and Kayla Dean needed was a lawn chair and a sweater for their game Saturday.
The Ontario girls soccer offense took care of everything.
Kim Boyd scored two goals, while teammate Christina Markee chipped in a goal and two assists to lead the Tigers to a 10-0 drubbing of Irrigon High School at the Alameda Elementary School soccer fields in Ontario.
The Tigers jumped out of the gate quickly against the Knights and answered the opening whistle with three goals in the first seven minutes of play. Ashley Moeller scored at the 3 minute mark after taking a shot from 15 feet outside the penalty area and bending it just inside the right goal post past Irrigon goalkeeper Maggie Alsup. Two minutes later, Markee scored and Ashlee Captein kicked the third goal at the 7 minute mark. Jennifer Reyes scored the team’s fourth goal of the half at the 30-minute mark, which gave the Tigers the 4-0 halftime lead.
Eight different Ontario players scored goals as they planted 37 shots on goal and held the Knights shotless for the entire match.
“I think it was good because we got a lot of inexperienced players in the game,” Captein said. “It was great to have one of these games. We worked hard. We tried a lot to work as a team and work on a passing since we played a team that was less skilled than us.”
The Irrigon girls soccer team is playing for the first time at the varsity level. The Knights struggled to maintain control of loose balls throughout the game and couldn’t keep up with the overall speed and quickness of the Ontario midfielders.
“I think we started good, but we need to be more in shape,” Moeller, a junior midfielder, said.
Ontario’s Brea Ribeiro started things off in the second half, and Boyd, Moeller, Keila Nelson and Pricilla Ramirez rounded out the second-half scoring for the Tigers (3-0 overall, 1-0 Greater Oregon League).
“We wanted to be able to work the ball and maintain our team shape,” Ontario head coach Greg Walk said. “This is a good game for us to play. It was kind of a breakout for us in a way, but I know we have a lot more powerful teams to play in the future.”
Ontario next travels to play GOL rival La Grande Tuesday.
In other girls action:
Baker City 5, Payette 1
The Payette girls soccer team came up short on the road against Baker City Saturday, losing 5-1. Hannah Peterson scored Payette’s loan goal, and Kaylin Oxnam recorded 16 saves for the Pirates (2-6 overall, 0-1 SRV), who travel to Fruitland on Monday.
In boys action:
Weiser 1, Kuna 1
Weiser’s Ivan Hernandez scored the game-tying goal in the 70th minute, as the Wolverines battled to a 1-1 tie against Kuna on Saturday afternoon. “It was a pretty evenly played game,” Weiser coach Kathy Bokides said. “Our defense played really well, everybody talked, everybody passed.” Christian Alvarado recorded 13 saves for Weiser (6-2-1 overall, 4-0-0 league), who hosts Homedale on Tuesday.
Payette 2, Baker City 2
Payette midfielder Kelly Higby scored the game-tying goal at the 57-minute mark to help the Pirates salvage the 2-2 tie against non-league boys soccer opponent Baker City in Baker City.
Payette head coach Roger Aguilar gave all the credit to sophomore goalkeeper Brandon Bake, who made several quality saves to keep the match deadlocked.
“I was looking for this game to give us confidence we need to carry us through the rest of the season,” Aguilar said.
