Malheur County Emergency Services Commander Lt. Craig Smith said Friday river levels in the county are expected to rise again over the weekend because of expected rain showers.
Of most concern is the Owyhee River, he said, where big flows into the reservoir were predicted.
While inflows had dropped below 9,000 cubic feet per second Thursday, they began increasing Friday afternoon and were back above 11,000 cfs. Saturday morning.
However, storage in the Owyhee Reservoir did get down near the Owyhee Irrigation District's goal of 670,000 acre feet. The Owyhee Irrigation District baseline storage goal was designed to create more space to help control any major runoff. Discharge from the reservoir remained above 10,000 cfs.
Smith said the question will be whether more water will have to be spilled. The Malheur River is expected to stay just below flood stage, he said. He urged residents to be aware of the potential for additional flooding.
Meanwhile the United States Bureau of Land Management advises local residents to use caution when traveling on unpaved roads within the Vale BLM District. According to a news release, the road to Birch Creek Ranch near Jordan Valley is currently impassable. This site is a popular pick up destination for floaters on the Owyhee River who are advised to check with their shuttle operator or the Vale District Office before making plans to go into this area.
“Although not all roads are washed out like the one into Birch Creek, any unpaved road can pose a potential hazard right now,” Vern Pritchard, District Engineer, said. When the rains cease, engineers will perform damage assessments in the district and schedule any necessary road repairs. Meanwhile, visitors planning a trip on lands administered by the Vale District should check with the Vale office when planning any trips that involve travel off of the major paved highways.
