The Ontario Falcons extended their undefeated season to 5-0, crushing the Nampa Barn Owls, 12-3, Wednesday at Elks Memorial Field.
The Falcons used 14 hits and two errors by the Barn Owls in the rout, leading from the beginning of the game.
The Falcons started quickly, leading 2-0 at the end of the first inning. In the second, Bryon Reinland led off with a hard shot down the third base line for a single. After the Barn Owls walked Ricky Philippi, Jimmy Cox doubled into center, driving in two runs. A bloop single by Matt Mejia drove in Cox, upping the score to 5-1 early in the game.
The Barn Owls pulled pitcher Corey Harper after two and a third innings after giving up the five runs. Barn Owl's Jason Simons fared no better, peppered with a home run by Bryon Reinland on his first pitch, a two-run bomb. The Falcons were unable to capitalize on the next three batters, however, leaving the bases loaded at the end of the inning.
After the Barn Owls scored a single run in the top of the fourth, the Falcons answered in the bottom of the sixth with a four-run barrage. A solo home run by Tyler Smith in the bottom of the seventh which hit the sign in right field capped off the day for the undefeated team. The Falcons were unable to advance Reinland in the bottom of the eighth when his double hit hard off the center field wall for a double.
"We scored a lot of runs," Falcons head coach Jesse Smith said of the game. "We did what we had to do."
For the day, Joey Zubizarreta picked up the win with Matt Greely picking up the save for the Falcons.
"Zubizarreta and Greely threw well for us today," Smith said of the winning pair.
The Falcons meet Nampa again on Friday in a road game.
