For one busy recent high school graduate, all the hard work and dedication is starting to pay off.
Trent Holcomb, a 2004 graduate of Nyssa High School, is starting to reap the Benefits of the past four years, when he was selected as one of 25 scholarship winners, out of over 75,000 applicants, for a Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Scholarship, from the Got Milk campaign.
The selection committee consisted of numerous sports celebraties, such as Brad Johnson, Michelle Kwan, Andy Roddick, and Tony Hawk, to name a few. The committee first narrowed down all entrants by ACT and SAT scores, before breaking it down by many different criteria.
Holcomb was selected as one of the winners, and taken to Orlando to receive his award. Once there he received packets and lot of theme park information.
Holcomb said that while in Orlando, he stayed in a Walt Disney World hotel, and was treated like somebody important.
"Everybody there was a valedictorian and all-state in their sports," Holcomb said. "It feels pretty good. To get money is one thing, but to get recognized at a level like this is another thing."
He also said that he was able to meet Johnson and Kwan.
While in Orlando, Holcomb was given his check and a trophy for his accomplishments.
Upon earning this scholarship, Holcomb was in USA Today on June 25, Sports Illustrated, July 12, and ESPN the Magazine, July 16.
Shortly after returning to Nyssa from Orlando, Holcomb left for a trip to Australia, to participate in the Down Under Bowl. He played on a team with athletes from Idaho, Oregon, Utah and Washington, and played in two games.
"It was great to get with the group of kids who were good at football. We got treated pretty well down there too," Holcomb said.
Holcomb also went to McMinnville, to play in the All-Star East West Baseball game, June 12 and June 13.
Although Holcomb has been busy all summer, it is not over yet. He still is going to head to the East West Shriner Game on Aug. 7.
Holcomb said he plans to attend Eastern Oregon University in the Fall.
